All fine after the first episode though - though I do wonder if his pronunciation of Asuka was helped by the wrestler lols.

Also since the rerelease itself was mentioned the new dub is better than the original other than Asuka. The new script is a bit better overall but does lose some iconic lines and have some flaws like the like/love issue. No Fly Me to the Moon is the real tragedy.

I'm not a fan of the new dub, especially some of the localization changes and decisions. Definitely don't like the new Shinji as much compared to the, as far as I'm concerned, legendary Spike Spencer. I do think that's not the VAs fault, they're good in general, but the direction leaves a lot to be desired. There's certainly some questionable stuff with the localization lead at Stujdi Khara, too, and the choices he made and excuses he presented for said choices showing some contradictions and bias.

I think it's easily the worst way to watch Eva, compared to the original sub and dub. Losing Fly Me to the Moon is the one everyone is stuck on, but it's pretty low on my list of issues. Heck, even on the sub side of things, some technical issues with the subs where the on screen text isn't subbed while watching in Japanese ( but is if you watch it in English with subtitles??) means even that's inferior to digging up old subs.

Individually I agree with a lot of the flaws you list. However, it certainly is not the worst way to watch Eva but the best. Picture quality is hugely important for this show and the series has never looked (or sounded) this good. The series is also easier to access than ever which is very important.

As for the dubs (and full disclosure I have not yet watched 25&26 and EoE with the new dub), I don't agree overall. I think people often have a major case of rose-tinted glasses regarding the original dub (and the sub to a lesser extent). It was excellent for its time in the 90s. Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant defined Shinji and Asuka for a generation. Rei, Misato, both Gendos, all great. The script was really good at adding flavour to a lot of regular lines as well. However, it has some pretty major flaws. The supporting cast is bad, and the script has errors in it which confuse the plot and even get some plot elements wrong (which affects the sub as well), and certain elements seem technically rough. The Netflix dub is a lot more even. The supporting cast is miles better. Casey Mongillo is actually a really good Shinji with a different take on the character. All the other leads are very strong as well, I love the new Gendo. The script is a lot clearer but is generally still quite effective too, despite the fact that I do agree with a lot of the specific complaints levied at it.

What I really would have liked to see is the old leads with the new supporting cast, or the Rebuild cast redub the series. But I think after the initial shock wears off the Netflix dub is definitely great in its own right, and I am definitely seeing a lot more positivity as time goes on.

It is a shame there is not an "optimal" way to watch the show but Netflix is overall the best, especially if you are a new viewer.

I am inclined to disagree with your assessment of the quality, but this will always be a matter of taste. There are just too many things I can't get over that I disagree with, too much behind the scenes medeling. Again, the voice cast in general is not the issue for me, it's the directing decisions. There are plenty of issues I take, but there was never a chance I was going to be on board with a director who actively chose to keep the English dialogue as "Third Children" to begin with, forget his obviously and provable false claim that he was doing so because he prefers direct literal transactions, which is easily disproven by points where he went interpretive when it suited his agenda.

I am also heavily against a majority of how Netflix has treated anime in general over the last couple of years and think it's a net negative, so this absolutely flavors my view. They came out swinging with Devilman, and it's just been a rapid decent since then both in the quality of originals and the "Netflix Jail" impact it's had on the simulcast industry, resulting in many, many shows completely failing to reach an audience as a direct result of their business model. Even with Evangelion, we will likely never receive a home release of this series ever again because of their licensing, something I've desired for over a decade.

Well I won't get too into it because like you say, Giant Bomb, but there is an important point to clear up: you are conflating two different people. The guy you are talking about isn't the director, he is the translator. The director is Carrie Keranen who plays Misato, and I don't really see any issues with direction. A few choices that were better in the original but I can't think of any instances of poor direction, can you point some out? Seems like your issue is with the script.

It is with the script, so I'm probably just wording that poorly. In terms of the direction, my issue would lie with pronunciation choices and inconsistency, but that's not the primary issue.
