4-4 didn't bother giving any reason for them to exist so they could be flexible with it. 4-4 just put them in there to be mysterious. Regardless, I think you can make the explanation work even with Kristoph's, too, since the idea is that it's so deeply ingrained in their subconscious that it's essentially a part of who that person is. You couldn't extract the secret without doing psychological damage if you're not careful about it.

and when they exposed Kristoph's secrets in 4-4 the dude certainly went psycho

I dunno seems like pretty post-hoc justification. I'm pretty sure kristoph just had block psyche-locks because he's so EVIL and because they didn't want you to do a psyche-lock investigation there

well yeah like I said they exist just to exist in 4-4

but they did pretty well with it in 5-5 considering they had literally nothing to go on

Athena's black psyche-locks are great.

Kristoph's black psyche-locks felt like the game trying to make the most badass villain imaginable in a very fanfic-like way. I kinda thought maybe they were also saving something about Kristoph for a sequel which never materialized but that may have been me reading too much into it.

Didn't Takumi stop working on the main series after AA4? So anything he had planned with Kristoph and the black psyche-locks wouldn't have materialized.

Yeah, AJ was always intended to be Takumi's last game in the series.

I would say Takumi was losing it but then he went on to make Ghost Trick which is incredible

Well, he did get a little hamstrung because he originally didn't want to include Phoenix in AJ, but Capcom insisted on it.

Using the courtroom ruins as the setting for 5-5's trial was such a great idea. Makes for an excellent atmosphere.

definitely one of the cooler parts of 5-5.

i guess starting with the AAI games, the final trial has always been in a non-standard courtroom.

I actually didn't know that and it surprises me a bit. AJ just doesn't feel like anyone's last game, the way T&T does. Everything about the way the game ends (revelations about Apollo and Trucy left hanging, Apollo's character development in general) makes it feel like it's leading to more. It seems strange to me a writer would deliberately write something intended for a different writer to finish, but I suppose this isn't the only case of such things happening.
