That’s because Ixalan and Eldritch Moon were standouts, but most were mediocre to bad with a few glimmers of awesome (Ob Nixilis in BFZ, Yahenni in Kaladesh).

Yea the Ixalan stories were pretty great. Having the consistency in this set is nice as well.

So what do you all think about the end of blocks, in general?

I think their rationale is fine, there's no point extending something to two or three sets if it can be done better in one. Have to see how it's actually executed though.

I like that every draft format from now on will be triple one set, so I'm happy with the change.

This. The only “bad” thing is that we can’t do staggered multicolor blocks a la Ravnica/RTR. RTR/Gatecrash/Dragon’s Maze was a lot of fun to draft.

Mechanically, I think it’s good. No more Born of the Gods travesties, and R&D has more creative freedom without being tied to previous (potentially bad) themes.

i think mechanically it is a great decision, small sets are a pain

story-wise... it just so happens that this time we're only staying here for one set, which will feel strange. Not as much time to get invested in the "monster of the week"

we'll see what happens- almost seems like the main villain will be defeated before we get to play with any of the cards!
You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Well they said that we might still stay on a single plane over multiple sets and maybe even have a mechanic carry over. They just aren’t beholden to it anymore, nor does one set mix Limited with anything else.

I'm wary because it felt like Wizards had finally gotten more proficient with using small sets. I think I'm somewhat pessimistic about the change.

The only small set I think they did well was Rivals.

Eldritch Moon was good.
