It's like the Marvel game. Missions have challenges to beat to gather the gold bricks. No hub worlds, just mission select. Surprised that the movie cut-scenes aren't in 3D.

Stopped playing it until I go see the movie as obviously full of spoilers.

Unlike the Marvel game (on the 3DS) this game is actually pretty fun.
It also doesn't make you do the levels over & over just to get enough Gold Bricks to advance to the next Story area.

Also to break up the top-down levels they have stuff like falling down a hole levels, vehicle levels, and a level where you slide down a hill.

Pros:

Doesn't make you frustrated with replaying the same levels several times
Variety of levels keeps it interesting
They use the voices from the movie in the cutscenes
Lots of different characters & stuff to find
The "Everything is Awesome" song is the music between levels

Cons

Some levels are a tad difficult even for a LEGO expert like myself
Still has that annoying time limit to get to the end of the level (though you don't fail if you run out of time)
That song above WILL get stuck in your head
Obviously will spoil the movies plot, so don't play it if you want to see the movie
Still don't really like the top down look for these games, they could have done the more traditional side scrolling/platforming 3D type game like the other LEGO games
Some stores don't seem to have the 3DS version (Best Buy & Target) despite the DS/3DS is a very popular system

Overall I give the game a very solid 8/10

Well worth the $29.99 price tag for the 3DS version
Obviously the console versions will be a lot more "robust" with better graphics & that sort of thing.

The Marvel game for the 3DS is not worth $39.99 at all IMO

Hope they go back to the layout of LEGO Lord of the Rings for the next game LEGO The Hobbit (coming out around Tax Day).
BTW that game will feature spoilers for the 3rd Hobbit movie, since that doesn't come out until December of this year.

BTW GameStop (where I bought this game) said that I should pre-order that Hobbit game. Cause they said they might not "get enough".
Yeah right, you can bet that even Target & Best Buy are going to be getting that game for sure for the 3DS.

I was able to get it yesterday and it was actually a very fun game. It did spoil the movie though, but the game was solid. I beat it and am now working on getting all the extras.

The LEGO Hobbit game has only the first two movies so there won't be spoilers for the third one.

That makes no sense to just do the two movies.
When LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean came out that had spoilers for the 4th movie before that came out IIRC.

It makes no sense to release the entire plot of the third movie months before it even comes out. Lego Pirates only came out a little before the 4th movie.

It makes complete sense to me why TT only includes the first two movies. So they can make another Hobbit game including the third movie. Whats the one way video game companies do to make more money? Making people buy the rest of the game that should be included. I'm talking about paid DLC and game add-ons. Think of it like that. Heck, they even might make the third movie DLC once the time comes.

But all we know is that only two movies are in the game and TT is bound to make people pay more for the third. Just strategies companies use to make more money.
