Instead of having the vets constantly repeat ourselves to the rest of you guys, let's have a thread about it.

(Whether this get stickied, or not, is up to you. Otherwise, we can keep this bumped on a constant basis as long as we can.)

For anyone still in some strange denial phase...

The games' covers are a dead throwaway that Disney is here.

The birth of Kingdom Hearts -- elevator story
From the words of an executive, that I had to source up from an old KHI forum post.

"The idea for Kingdom Hearts came about when producer Shinji Hashimoto met with a Disney executive in an elevator; Square and Disney had previously worked in the same building in Japan. The production team was composed of over one hundred members from both Square and Disney. The game began development in February 2000 and originally focused more on the gameplay with a simple story to appeal to Disney's target age range. After executive producer Hironobu Sakaguchi told director Tetsuya Nomura the game would be a failure if it did not aim for the same level as the Final Fantasy series, Nomura began to develop the story further. When choosing the Disney worlds to include in the game, Nomura and his team tried to pick worlds that had distinctively different looks. They also tried to take into account worlds with Disney characters that would be interesting. Though they had few restrictions on which worlds they could use from the Disney franchises, they tried to remain within each character's boundaries set by their respective Disney films."

April 1st, 2002, the NA KH1 website's news says...
The long wait is over for Japanese gamers, as KINGDOM HEARTS was released for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system in Japan last week. KINGDOM HEARTS is an amazing new adventure from the creators of FINAL FANTASY. A game that has to be seen to be believed, KINGDOM HEARTS marks a milestone in gaming by combining Disney's world-renown franchises and SQUARESOFT's state-of-the-art computer graphics and epic storytelling. We'll have more information about the Japanese release of KINGDOM HEARTS in our next update.

Combination, but not a cross-over.

August 6th, 2002.

"KINGDOM HEARTS will deliver a unique interactive gaming experience that melds Square and Disney entertainment legacies of animation, design, story-telling and character development," said Jun Iwasaki, president of Square Electronic Arts. "KINGDOM HEARTS represents a truly unique role-playing game experience, combining more than 100 Disney characters and new and familiar Disney worlds in one game. We are also excited to offer new elements in the North American version that are not available in the Japanese version of the game."

But what about the Final Fantasy characters?

They're cameos, who can easily be replaced by anyone.. Same goes for TWEWY and any other Nomura designed character.

Sora, Riku, and Kairi are.....?

Disney characters.

I said "Disney characters".

Terra, Aqua, Ven, Xion, Xehanort..... And the rest of the OCs?

Disney characters!

Old Nomura interview that I'm glad I quoted on Gfaqs from KHU, 11 months ago.

He is Sora. Walking into the meeting with a baseball cap pulled securely over his face and shorts with multiple belt buckles that stretch down to the middle of his shins, Tetsuya Nomura is a nearly a real-life reflection of the hero in both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. It’s not surprising, really. Out of all the characters Nomura has designed in his career at Square (which includes well-known faces from Final Fantasy VII to Final Fantasy X), the cheery keyblade-bearing youngster is at the top of his list. “Sora is my favorite character,” Nomura says. “[Kingdom Hearts] was the first game I directed, so I could give all the characters a fresh look even though there were some superiors involved [in the design process].”

Clearly, Nomura is excited about continuing directing duties for Kingdom Hearts II because it gives an opportunity to fix some of the problems with the previous game, as well as integrate features that originally didn’t make the cut. “The engine has been redeveloped,” Nomura explains. “I’m really proud of the enhanced battle system and that all of the characters have a serious role this time around.” Even the infamous Gummi Ship portion of Kingdom Hearts has been retooled for the sequel. “It was a good concept,” Nomura says, “but it’s completely new in Kingdom Hearts II. It’s more like an attraction or a ride.”

Nomura knows this experience is crucial to his career, but he relishes the opportunity to learn more about directing before moving on to other projects. But there’s a bittersweet side to his involvement with Kingdom Hearts II. “I love Sora, but it’s with a broken heart.” Nomura mutters out from underneath his hat.

Indeed, not unlike a parent giving a child up for adoption, Nomura has no control over Sora or any other original characters appearing in Kingdom Hearts. The contract between Square Enix and Disney gives almost full control of the Kingdom Hearts property over to Disney. If you happen to see Sora appearing outside of a game in a something like a cartoon, there’s very little chance Nomura is involved, but that doesn’t affect his excitement (or ours) for Kingdom Hearts II.

And to conclude, as promised, I'm including Hotel_Security's post from the other thread that should drive it home about "FF worlds".

Hotel_Security posted...

THAT is KH, not just Disney, so why should FF worlds be off limits?

Because Nomura is quite strict about what he uses from FF. He likes to stick to only FF things that he himself made. He designed characters, not worlds and not settings (or, if he did work on those things, it was limited). Nomura does not want to use something he didn’t work on out of respect for those that did. Which is why you won’t see “FF Worlds” and it’s why he basically invented Hollow Bastian as a “home” for the FF characters. I believe the only FF character he’s allowed that he didn’t work on was Vivi and supposedly that was because the other developers talked him into it. So don’t expect much on the FF front unless Nomura designed it. Simple as that. This is not a Square decision…this is clearly a Nomura decision.
