As I said I am new to this and played a demo on 360 I think and loved it but want the Wii U ver.

Did I need to play any of the previous ones to understand this ones story?

I was 26 when the PS2 version came out but there were so many good PS2 games that it got lost in the crowd... for me anyhow.

Not really, this game is a prequel. The protagonist from the first game isn't even born yet.

You will miss out on references and the significance of some of the things that happened in regards to setting up what happens in the first game, but that, at worst, means a couple of scenes aren't going to seem particularly significant, since they are related to events from the first game.
