Something like this would be better:

Under 250 Messages: 365 days
251-500 Messages: 180 Days
501-1000 Messages: 90 Days
1001-2500 Messages: 45 Days
2501-5000 Messages: 20 Days
5001-7500 Messages: 10 Days
7501-10000 Messages: 5 Days
10001-12500 Messages: 4 Days
12501-15000 Messages: 3 Days
15001-20000 Messages: 2 Days
20001 or more Messages: 1 Day

If thats too much then:

Under 100 Messages: 365 Days
101-250 Messages: 180 Days
251-500 Messages: 90 Days
501-1000 Messages: 45 Days
1001-2500 Messages: 20 Days
2501-5000 Messages: 10 Days
5001-7500 Messages: 6 Days
7501-10000 Messages: 5 Days
10001-12500 Messages: 4 Days
12501-15000 Messages: 3 Days
15001-20000 Messages: 2 Days
20001 or more Messages: 1 Day

This is perfect.
Reminder: Discussions of current news stories, social topics, and random posts do NOT belong on gaming boards.

to be fair a lot of old boards have only useless posts and people self-bumping their threads over and over (like that pika740 person on mario boards) why do u want to preserve such posts?

The real reason CJayC originally put in that ultra short limit was to clear out off topic threads on rarely visited boards quickly (topics like: "I now own this board." or "X wuz here" for instance) and to not have to bother the mods with it, saving their time for real issues and not litter collection.

But, the purge monster was tamed and he became a librarian. (on top, we now have off topic flair)

Now that quick archive is 99% useless and counter productive.

My way of doing archiving would be a typical age counter + total messages, but on top of that, keep a certain # of topics alive.

Under 250 Messages: 365 days
251-500 Messages: 180 Days
501-1000 Messages: 90 Days
1001-2500 Messages: 45 Days
2501-5000 Messages: 20 Days
5001-7500 Messages: 10 Days
7501-10000 Messages: 5 Days
10001-12500 Messages: 4 Days
12501-15000 Messages: 3 Days
15001-20000 Messages: 2 Days
20001 or more Messages: 1 Day

This, but like, also always keep 10 topics alive regardless.

If they didn't lock so quickly, people wouldn't have to bump their posts so often to keep them open. They could just sit there and eventually get a reply when the next person came along.

my point is that whether they lock in a week or a month if nobody is posting anymore theyre not worth keeping alive anyway theres lots of post that are nothing but mass bumps or things like "my board" that rly dont need to be kept around

plus if someone comes after it got archived and wants to reply they can make a new thread and see if they get better luck, its not that hard, ppl just want them to keep em alive reach 500 even if most posts are just bumps or pointless stuff

Wrong, there are boards that have an active community only because someone bumps threads to keep them alive.

Case in point: SNES Gemfire was active enough to be on the top ten SNES boards. Then the resident bumper was chased away, and in under a month every thread on the board was locked.

...somehow, despite posting here twice and supporting the idea of keeping old boards more active, I forgot to officially sign. -_-;;;
