The longer this site goes on, the more a change on this is needed. People hardly post on non-current game boards as much as they did in the early days of the site; most of the site's activity comes from the big name games on the most modern consoles. There is virtually no way to have a legitimate discussion on an older game if the topic is likely to purge before a single person ever sees it. There needs to be a massive extension on dead boards that allows infrequent visitors to converse with each other. I've seen game boards with a big wall of 1-post archived topics saying like "Response to previous archived topic..." No one even wants to post on boards like that because they're not sure if anyone will see their messages.

Since the storage is the same whether a topic is read only or not, this makes sense.

no it isn't. There is a lot of information that is removed when a topic is Archived.

signs and to add to that say that a member wants to change his community board topic but a whole bunch of archived messages will then make 0 sense for the new topic

I'm a Long Time User, and I must support this. Discussions of older games is one of the main reasons I come here, and I would spend more time on this site if I knew topics would be active longer. As it is now, it makes me a bit stressed.
