Just went to the board for Mario Party
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/197861-mario-party
the most recent thread is only 2 weeks old, and the thread is already archived!

gamefaqs is pretty much the only website suited to dedicated discussion of specific old games (even if it is very slow), but with the rapid archiving it is currently impossible

Learn the Purge/Archive rates

The daily purge process archives or deletes older topics from boards every night at about 4:00am Pacific. Topical game board messages are archived (closed, read-only), all other boards are purged (deleted). Depending on how many messages a board has, the following schedule is followed:

Under 6 Messages: 10 Days
6-100 Messages: 30 Days
101-250 Messages: 20 Days
251-500 Messages: 15 Days
501-1000 Messages: 12 Days
1001-2500 Messages: 10 Days
2501-5000 Messages: 7 Days
5001-7500 Messages: 6 Days
7501-10000 Messages: 5 Days
10001-12500 Messages: 4 Days
12501-15000 Messages: 3 Days
15001-20000 Messages: 2 Days
20001 or more Messages: 1 Day

no thanks, the rates are moronic and stifle any discussion.

It would be nice if boards with less than 1000 active messages had much longer schedule. Maybe a year or something.

I agree. I sign for this everytime the idea comes up. For some reason, it gets shot down.
Does anyone know why this gets shot down?

I agree wholeheartedly.

It's awesome that we have a dedicated board for basically every game ever made. But the purge rates pretty much defeat the purpose in most cases.

It's not the early 2000's anymore. Storage memory is cheap now. I highly doubt that letting topics on the slow boards (1000 messages or less) stay open for a few months (or hell, even a year) is going to cripple the site.

As it is, 90% of the game boards are useless.
Keep on chooglin'.

Something like this would be better:

Under 250 Messages: 365 days
251-500 Messages: 180 Days
501-1000 Messages: 90 Days
1001-2500 Messages: 45 Days
2501-5000 Messages: 20 Days
5001-7500 Messages: 10 Days
7501-10000 Messages: 5 Days
10001-12500 Messages: 4 Days
12501-15000 Messages: 3 Days
15001-20000 Messages: 2 Days
20001 or more Messages: 1 Day

If thats too much then:

Under 100 Messages: 365 Days
101-250 Messages: 180 Days
251-500 Messages: 90 Days
501-1000 Messages: 45 Days
1001-2500 Messages: 20 Days
2501-5000 Messages: 10 Days
5001-7500 Messages: 6 Days
7501-10000 Messages: 5 Days
10001-12500 Messages: 4 Days
12501-15000 Messages: 3 Days
15001-20000 Messages: 2 Days
20001 or more Messages: 1 Day

I wonder if it has to do with the servers and space needed. And that;s why they archive on the current time frame.

If space was an issue, they'd be more inclined to purge them over archiving them.
Don't try to think we can understand each other. For some reason, people think that they can do that. Remember that they can't. Never completely. Never enough.

As I recall, the current pruning rates date back a decade or more. Meanwhile, when you used to get a 1 GB hard drive, you'd now get a 1 TB hard drive for the same cost.

It's true that there are a lot more games (thank you, mobile shovelware), but they should still be able to afford longer times for older boards.
