I’m thinking of upgrading to Xbox one but I wanted to know if I can install my Xbox 360 games on Xbox one or does it just run off disc?

Pretty sure most 360 games that are BC can be downloaded but I think there are a few exceptions. I think the list on the Xbox site might tell if its retail copy only.

BC games will never run off the disc. If a game is backward compatible, it will download the entire game from the servers.

So do I have to buy the game again or does it detect the game and install from server?

No, one of the biggest benefits of the backward compatibility program is NOT having to rebuy games.

If you put in a copy of, for example, Doom 3 BFG, your Xbox One would detect that it is Doom 3 BFG and download the game, patches, and emulator all at once in one file. Once that is done you can go to manage game and have it install any DLC you own as well (not sure if Doom 3 has any but I know a lot of 360 games do). You’ll still need the disc to launch the game even with it installed as a form of DRM. Basically, it’s mimicking the 360’s install feature except now it’s mandatory.

Any digital games you own work the same as always, but now you have a “ready to install” tab that’s super convenient rather than using your download history.
