Playing backward-compatible games on your Xbox One

Select digital and disc-based Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games can be played on Xbox One. These BC games use an emulator for the older Xbox operating systems, providing most features of those systems, such as screenshots, broadcasting, and Game DVR.

Note - The Game DVR is disabled for certain games; for example, Borderlands 1.

For a list of BC games for Xbox One, go here: https://www.xbox.com/xbox-one/backward-compatibility/available-games

To see if games you own are BC, go here: https://account.xbox.com/MyGames?gameType=Xbox360

What about my other Xbox 360 games?

The BC team is working on adding more titles. Not all titles will be supported though.
People can also vote on games they’d like to see become BC here: https://xbox.uservoice.com/

How come all the games are not BC?

Basically, each game is a repackaged version of the original that identifies itself as an Xbox One title to the console, which means it comes down to licensing and time.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-xbox-one-x-back-compat-how-does-it-actually-work

For more information on the BC process, listen to the 1 year anniversary episode of BC on Major Nelson's Podcast:

https://majornelson.com/podcast/584-xbox-one-backward-compatibility-turns-1/

And read a statement made by one Bill Stillwell (one of the guys working on BC):

How to play backward-compatible games on Xbox One?

Just pop your game disc into your Xbox One. If a digital game you bought is compatible with Xbox One, look for it in your games list under Ready to install.

Do I need to be online to play BC games?

No, the backward compatible games will work offline after an initial verification and download.

https://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/251647-games/suggestions/14946522-offline-backwards-compatibility-for-disc

How do I open Xbox 360 notifications?

Press and hold the View and Menu buttons at the same time.

How to start a party on Xbox 360 or Original Xbox to someone on an Xbox One?

To party chat with friends who are also playing on Xbox One, press the Xbox button, then select Multiplayer > Start a party. This works for anyone on Xbox One, whether they’re playing games made for Xbox One, Xbox 360, or Original Xbox.

How to do an Xbox 360 to Xbox 360 party chat?

To start a party with friends using Xbox 360, go to the Xbox 360 guide while you're in the Xbox 360 game by pressing the View and Menu buttons at the same time. Then select Party > Invite Players to Party > Select the friends you want to play with.
Once your friend accepts your invite, you'll both join the party.

Can I play multiplayer with friends who are playing the game on Xbox 360 or Xbox One?

Yes. For games that have multiplayer, you will be able to play with others who own the title on Xbox 360.

If you hit problems with backward-compatible party or multiplayer games, try the Xbox One Multiplayer Game Solution.

https://support.xbox.com /xbox-one/networking/nat-error-solution

What about playing Original Xbox games over Live?

Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer that were available on the original Xbox will not be available. However, offline multiplayer scenarios such as co-op and system-link are supported as they were originally.

Can I be signed in on Xbox 360 and Xbox One at the same time?

Yes. However, you can’t be signed in on more than one Xbox One or more than one Xbox 360 at once.

What about my Xbox 360 achievements?

If you earned achievements on Xbox 360, you'll still have them when you play on Xbox One.

You can view your Xbox 360 achievements by:

- Using the Achievements feature in your Xbox 360 game

- Selecting Achievements from the Xbox 360 guide

- Selecting Achievements in the Xbox One guide

Will the BC original Xbox games come with achievements?

No. https://twitter.com/XboxQwik/status/875720043610333184

Can I continue a game I started on my Xbox 360?

If you saved your games to the cloud from an Xbox 360, you will be able to continue that game on the Xbox One. Some titles do not support cloud storage. In those cases, game saves will not be recovered on the Xbox One. For help on saving your games to the cloud from your Xbox 360 console, check the following pages:

Troubleshooting: http://support.xbox.com/ xbox-360/games/cloud-save-troubleshoot

FAQ: http://support.xbox.com/ xbox-360/games/game-saves-in-the-cloud-faq

What about my 360 accessories and Kinect?

Accessories designed for Xbox 360 or Original Xbox, and games requiring those accessories, don’t work on Xbox One. This means racing wheels, fight sticks, and other accessories won't work with Xbox 360 or Original Xbox games you play on Xbox One. Also, games that use the Xbox 360 Kinect will not work with Kinect on Xbox One.

Will I see my avatars and achievements from Xbox 360?

Yep. Your avatars and achievements will be there when you sign in on Xbox One.

Do I need to also own an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox to play these games?

No.

Can I buy these games from the Xbox One store?

If you want to purchase these games, you can buy them digitally from the store on your Xbox 360 console, on xbox.com (search for titles in Xbox 360 games) or from your local retailer.

I’m having trouble buying or downloading an Xbox 360 game on Xbox One.

For help with this, see Troubleshoot Xbox 360 Marketplace purchasing.

https://support.xbox.com/billing/payment-and-purchases/troubleshoot-xbox%20360-marketplace-purchasing

How do I remove Xbox 360 games and profiles that are saved on my Xbox One?

You can remove all Xbox 360 games and profiles that have been saved to your console by following these steps:

1.Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

2.Select System > Settings > System > Storage, and then select Clear local Xbox 360 storage.

This won’t affect cloud-saved games or Xbox One games and profiles。

Are there any advantages to playing these games on Xbox One?

Besides the system level stuff, like Game DVR and Twitch / Mixer, the benefits can vary depending on game. In general, BC games will have no screen tearing on the Xbox One, S, or X. In addition some games are specifically enhanced for the X.

I just noticed I messed up a couple of the links. There is an extra space in the middle of them, which breaks the url.

Here is the networking one:

https://support.xbox.com/xbox-one/networking/nat-error-solution

One of the support links:

https://support.xbox.com/xbox-one/console/compatibility-with-xbox-360-faq

And the ones relating to Cloud Storage:

Setting up cloud storage on 360: http://support.xbox.com/xbox-360/games/cloud-save-games

Troubleshooting: http://support.xbox.com/xbox-360/games/cloud-save-troubleshoot

FAQ: http://support.xbox.com/xbox-360/games/game-saves-in-the-cloud-faq

I should've also probably mentioned that Xbox 360 external hard drives are not compatible with the Xbox One.

If I missed anything else, then feel free to add.

God, can't do anything right.

Only joking. Great post and thanks, cleared up a few things I was wondering. I would request a sticky but it's already stuck.
