Dunno if enemy/boss should be one, but maybe since if you defeat a hard boss/mini boss and get rewarded with a good eq rather then just fighting a random enemy.

I ask because I hate buying from vendors. I always wonder "if I spend my money here, will I find one later and waste my money I spent?"

So for a little discussion lets here which one you hate the most. Mines definitely buying from stores.

I prefer finding special equipment throughout the world, whether they be hidden in dungeons or side areas that you wouldn't normally go to.

Honestly, anything other than having to farm materials in order to forge them.

Thats how I prefer it. I agree tho about farming materials UNLESS its like super weapons. FFX celestial weapons for instance I was okay with, but I didnt like the actual mini games they was locked behind.

Pretty good balance, but coming from the MMO World, I always felt more rewarded from a long questline.

Gathering 40 Atiesh Shards and killing a few epic bosses for a legendary staff felt infinitely better than "OK WEEK 40 LETS SEE IF THE 13% DROPRATE ITEM DROPS THIS TIME" of Boss drops, Or "WEEK 40 LET'S SEE IF THE .8% DROP OFF TRASH DROPS THIS TIME" For enemy drops.

Finding in the World is sort of removed from that list; And Buying never feels rewarding, in a traditional JRPG, There's that amazement when you trek to a new town and the equipment costs just a bit more than your pocket change, and you need to grind the last bit.

In a more traditional example, FF1, Finding the Adamant Ore in the Sky Palace, and taking it back to the Dwarf cave to forge Xcalbur was much more rewarding to me, than Opening a chest with Masamune in it.

FFX made me play in ways I completely didn't expect, completing a dozen Blitzball Seasons, dodging lightning or racing chocobos was Rewarding, even if the individual games got monotonous (to be fair, I really like Blitzball now, even if the loop to Pick up Wedge and brother and reset every season gets repetitive).

FFXII's Zodiac Spear, if it had been known beforehand, Would of been interesting, if the chests were marked, or some NPC said "If you contain your desires for these, There may be something special at the end of the line" But with no indicator besides "BUY THE GUIDE" (Squaresofts dirty f***ing practice before withholding 200$ worth of content for every game"

I think something you missed in this list, was Stealing; FF9 is one of my favorite Final Fantasy's, because it makes equipment so much more powerful with it's ability system, and having nearly every boss have multiple and often powerful steals is great. Even from the first tutorial fight, having the mage masher available hours early from stealing, just made for a rewarding system, and one of my criteria for a good jrpg, is how valuable the thief slot is.

I like getting them from boss drops. Having to search them out, to me, is annoying.

I'm fine with that because it's a reason to spend my gold on something.
Relax, it's just a game.

I'm okay with any of them, just never...ever dumb mini games to get parts and use those parts to power up said weapons. Looking at you FFX. So mini games in general, nuts to that.

I said "finding in the world", but actually, I like the way it's done in The Witcher 3. Armor diagrams can be found, and armor can be constructed, or enhanced, from them with the appropriate materials.

Why you gotta remind everyone of that s***?

But yeah - FFX and its stupid "hey - let's race chocobos so we can make this weapon actually useful!" is some really dumb s***. Almost as dumb as, "Let's dodge lightning 200 consecutive times!" or "Let's run into blue butterflies!"...
...
...oh, those are all the same game.

Yeah as someone who played runescape getting the super rare item was addicting but after awhile it just becomes tedious. Especially killing the same monster over and over, I definitely outgrew that. I havent played FF9 in so long I completely forgot about stealing!

That is pretty interesting I wish games would bring that back. Trying to stay alive while stealing was a fun past time haha.
