While not sure if the console will be backwards compatible with any system besides the ps4, I remember ps3 launch systems were backwards compatible with ps1/2, whilethe supermodels were not. That in itself is enough of a reason to consider buying it day 1.

Actually the newer slim PS3 models do have full BC with PSX (PS1) games (slims can also play some digital PS2 games but that's not proper BC).


If I remember correctly all models of the ps3 could play ps1 games, just not the ps2 games which was why I kept my original ps3 till I got a ps4, instead of getting a newer ps3.
