Is it paywalled/grindwalled? Is it like Wow where there are multiple slots and each slot changes visually when u equip something different? If so, do free to play players have boring looking loot, or is it loot rewarding just for playing? Or Is it like DCUO where gear unlocks styles which u can keep in spite of the item u have on? Is it like SkyForge where you're appearance is class based?

Loot a handful of specific armor that can be shared on the account 1 character a time.

There are only like 4 weapons that are shared depending on class.

Grindy gear upgrading-

You loot a base gear.
Upgrade the base gear with stones from 0 to +15 then pri duo tri tet pen

The gear has a 100durable stat. Failing an upgrade degrades the max durability. Such as
Base gear fail means lost armor stone + a degrade of 5 so instead of 100/100 durable stat its 95/95 max for that particular gear. Only time gear cannot be equipped is when its broken indicated by a red icon on it and 0/X like 0/100 turns gear red and must be repaired buy a blacksmith or repair general npc.

Two ways to repair max durability at a repair npc or blacksmith
1. Same base gear for +10 max durability
2. Memory fragments +1 max durability

(There are ways to use artisan p2w to make mem frags repair more)

Mem frags are highly valued because of its use on boss gear and boss weapons. Looting these boss items is a RNG nightmare.

Paid items are mostly cosmetic and offer fractional benefits that a nonpearl player do not have. We talking stat bonus such as +15Amity, chance for no death penalty with gear augs, faster swims, 10% combat exp, .5m visibility bonus, jump higher, and more with the applicable pearlshop sets. This is of course a long term investment vs immediate gains. 10% more combat exp helps than without. its cumulative value requires consistent play to maximize its benefit for the character.

Is it a frustrating loot system, or mostly enjoyable?

No doubt its grindy but you do it once for the most part. The key is not to get frustrated to the point of careless downgrade of gear.

Gear AP and Gear DP are the gear stats players rate their characters at. Armor covers your defensive stats for the most part while weapons and accessories cover your attack stats. High AP means better efficiency in killing mobs. High DP is better damage mitigation.

TRI gear is the preferred standard to high level gameplay. Obviously, the higher the better but thats more attuned towards pvp where gear and skill are needed to survive.

The gear grind becomes much much much... much much worse at TET and PEN gear levels.

Penalty for failing TRI+ is going back to PRI and doing the process of TRI all over again. We are talking chunks of AP or DP loss at TRI TET PEN. The losses get worse the higher it is

We talking near billions of silver invested to get multiple slots into that gear levels.
The challenge is to get at least one TET or PEN item. Then another and another until you are maxxed. Like i said earlier though, TRI is the glass ceiling everyone hits then enjoy the content of the game before losing their minds.

Your gear slots are:
Head
Chest
Hands
Feet

Primary Weapon
Secondary Weapon
Awakening Weapon (level 56+)

Ear
Ear
Neck
Finger
Finger
Waist

The main armor and weapon slots also have the pearlshop cosmetics for your character. Its the inner part of looking at your gear.

You also have 3 cosmetic slots
Ear (...and head. Mostly earrings)
Eyewear
Face (Nose, mouth, chin shared. Its one or the other never more)

So let me see if I'm understanding this-- thank you by the way for your answers!-- so not all gear has a visual appearance, and it sounds like this is not a "loot hunt" so much as an "upgrade hunt" where instead of slowly picking up Cooler and cooler items, u spend a lot of time searching for just one very good piece and upgrading it, and repeat the process again for each gear slot... is that right? I tend to lean away from games like these... I prefer the swimming in loot approach to my loot hunt

Simply yes.

The gear is randomly drop throughout the game world. Certain pieces are likely to drop at certain camps. But that's at the higher levels of the game. The boss gear is what everybody wants and these World bosses can be farmed in your early 50s with a group

You can grind for the gear itself or you can grind the money and use that to buy the gear.
