or is this game made for you to go out alone. that does not make sense imo.

You can't really ask the people of your community to come out on scavenges with you. Sometimes there will be missions where one of them are angry or scared, and you'll go out with them for some relaxing zombie killing. From what I've seen though, they only come with you on specific missions.
