I've heard how the FF14 story is one of the best parts of the game... but I don't see it (yet)

I'm playing the Free Trial, and I thought ARR story was such garbage all the way up until you get the airship/Cid/Praetorium stuff

I thought after finishing ARR story, I'd go to HW, which I assume would be better than ARR since it came later, but I've been doing fetch quest after fetch quest after fetch quest, and the only story development so far is that apparently people don't like Au Ra, and some Echo stuff. It is so boring that I'm considering skipping cutscenes and only paying attention to the voiced ones, since the voiced ones seem to give a recap of the situation anyway

So I dunno. ARR was boring 95% of the time, the quests after ARR are boring 100% of the time so far. I typically enjoy FF games and have played all of them, and while FF14's story is definitely a step up from WoW's story back when I played that, it has yet to become "good". Does it actually become good, or is it more like ARR where it's 95% garbage and/or set up, and then 5% stuff actually happening

ARR is generally considered the worst, although it also contains the most general world-building.
Once you get to HW, I think it's a tossup whether HW or ShB is better (I thought ShB was).
SB is also good, though sandwiched in between 2 great stories it's also kind of a low point.

apparently people to like Au Ra
I don't even see the spoiler there, but I also don't see what quests you mean during HW for that. There is very little Au Ra interaction in HW. Do you mean Yugiri? Yeah that Doman refugee stuff is still ARR. If you thought you were "in Heavensward" because of finishing Praetorium, you're not, not at all.

Basically, there's 1-50 ARR. And I imagine I share a similar opinion to you, it spends a lot of time on dry worldbuilding, and picks up for the climax. However, after Prae, it's STILL ARR. You're in the 2.x patches which used to literally be 100 quests before Heavensward, and a LOT of people were quitting the game in this stretch.
I don't know how it is now, I expect it's still on the dry side, and honestly I can't say you'll miss that much by at least speedreading/glossing over the dialogue in a brisk fashion.
A lot of it is setup, honestly, for Stormblood more than anything... which kind of really illustrates how much the story makes an effort to be coherent and to flow organically no matter how fantastical things get.

Once you're getting to Heavensward properly, I think you'll know, and it really picks up a lot there... and the overall pace and storytelling don't go that poorly again. So it's like 1-40 dry, 40-50 good, 50-still 50 dry, 51+ good.

Edit: Something to learn about FF14's structure compared to WoW's.
You have a #.0 MSQ, and it'll have some 8man climax like Praetorium at the end.
And like WoW, that MSQ is still going to continue until around the #.3 patch content after the level cap. This will generally be where that expansion's story is considered to have ended. And the .4 and .5 will usually be very obvious future setup.
In ARR's case, ARR basically "ends" in the .0... but the .1-.4ish go back to 1-40 worldbuilding and some Stormblood setup, and it's only around .5 where the trail is pushing to Ishgard. ARR's the big oddball here.
Herein I commit the chronicle of the traveler. Shepherd to the stars in the dark. Where you walk, my dearest friend, fate shall surely follow.

Ah, okay; gross. At least, I guess, the parts I'm complaining about are generally considered to be the worst and have made people quit the game. I gotta say, I've leveled 2 different classes to 60 while procrastinating on continuing these 100 quests or whatever, and now that I'm back on them I'm considering going back and leveling another. Anything to stop doing these quests where all I do is teleport to one place, talk to someone, teleport back to the place I was just at, talk to another person, teleport, etc etc. I thought we had cell phone equivalents, so I'm not sure why it's even necessary, but I digress

Anyway, I'll stay tuned to HW. Thanks for the helpful posts

I feel ya man, one of my friends quit the game about 4 or 5 times before he got through ARR, now though? He's currently working at getting every job to 80 and plays a little just about every day.

The best advice really is to just push yourself to get through the slog, the game does get better and unfortunately the story you're getting now? It does have more future relevance than you may currently think.

Most people enjoy it by the end of HW. Even with the 2.0 stuff, however, I'm willing to give this game a pass for having a better start than a lot of other games in the genre.

IMO of course.
