Obligatory generic image, since showing off your amazing MS Paint skills seems to be the hip new trend you kids are into these days. Reasonings are below:

Mario Newcomer: Bowser Jr.

Jr. has been in every major Mario game since his debut in primary antagonist roles, regularly outdoing his father in terms of actual antagonizing in games such as the New Super Mario Bros. titles and Sunshine. Regardless of whether or not he only uses his paintbrush for a Special or two, he is too small to be physically capable of using a majority of Bowser’s moves, which largely rely on him throwing his weight around (Side Special, smashes, bair, etc). His only valid competition is Paper Mario, but considering how much blatantly better the main Mario series sells than the RPGs and the fact Nintendo has shown they legitimately like and want to promote Bowser Jr. by having him recur so much (Very rare), he seems the obvious choice. Yes, this logic relating to Paper Mario can also be applied to Fawful. Toad has been around forever, sure, but there’s this part where, y’know, he’s about as relevant as a Goomba in terms of what he actually does.

DK Newcomer: K. Rool

Regardless of K. Rool being excluded from DKCR, said game has brought the series back to the forefront and didn’t introduce any new viable SSB4 candidates. In the debate against Dixie, K. Rool is more of a key player in the series than DK himself, never leaving his main villain role outside Jungle Beat and DKCR, whereas Dixie was never seen again outside generic cameos after DKC3. As far as the Forbidden 7, Sakurai directly confirmed he wanted Dixie to be a Nana to Diddy in an interview for Brawl and Nana does indeed have her own Forbidden 7 Data. He likely won’t attempt this again because Sakurai prefers not to alienate those who mained characters in previous installments, hence why he –still- has not uncloned Ganondorf of his god-awful moveset. Dixie’s only chance to get in was to leech off somebody with actual name recognition, Diddy Kong, and with that option gone she’s left out in the cold.

Wario Newcomer: None

Wario Land is largely dead considering how unsuccessful Shake It was, meaning Captain Syrup’s out, and there are far too many random side characters in WarioWare to pick out a second rep – Wario is the only WarioWare character that stands out, with his mug being plastered all over the thing. Ashley is agreed upon as the second WarioWare rep simply because of generic moveset potential – that and because affirmative action is apparently valid reasoning.

Yoshi Newcomer: None

Yoshi is largely a part of the Mario series considering there is very little exclusive to his series – Kamek has shown up in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Partners in Time, among other games, meaning he has to compete with the likes of Bowser Jr. for the Mario slot rather than the non-existent Yoshi slot. Nevermind the fact that Kamek doesn’t actually exist in Japan, the only land our dear Masahiro Sakurai cares about, where he is just referred to as random Magikoopa.

Zelda Newcomer: Tingle

The Japanese have the final say in everything, and Tingle is wildly popular in Japan because the Japanese are crazy like that – they plagued us with Jigglypuff, they can do it again. Tingle is also essentially the only Zelda character to recur outside the holy trinity, much less get multiple games he stars in. Ghirahim is Tingle’s only valid competition, but it’s doubtful a token flavor of the month villain can get in, seeing how Midna/Zant got into Brawl. It’s possible, yes, especially considering the Japanese are obsessed with sex above all else and Ghirahim is blatantly the most homosexual character Nintendo has ever created, but the fact we know so little about him doesn’t particularly help matters. He could just be another generic minion of Ganon like Zant was in a “shocking” plot twist.

Pokemon Newcomer: Victini

Victini’s movies will be coming out during Brawl’s early development time, and the fact he has –two- movies also makes him a stand out. He can also alleviate us of the dreaded curse of a generic humanoid body shape for the new Pokemon posterboy, having far more moveset potential with his unique shape and Fire/Psychic typing. Lucario stays because Pokemon will not have 4 reps for 3 games straight, and considering the fact that Sakurai considered bringing back even the likes of Roy and Dr. Mario in Brawl it’s almost assured he won’t turn his back on Lucario.

Metroid Newcomer: Ridley

Ridley is the most requested character to get into Smash who hasn’t yet been in, and is the only viable form of representation for a series that is blatantly under-represented, considering no other characters ever bother to recur within the series. Sakurai has directly stated that Ridley would be possible when asked about him in an interview, so regardless of him being creatively challenged in making a moveset for him (“He’d be slow.” Boo hoo, guess we’re cutting Ganon too then) he can ultimately make it happen.

Starfox Newcomer: None

Starfox is overly lucky to have as many reps as it does, when it warrants them no more than the likes of F-Zero. Things don’t look any better for Krystal when the first new game the series has had in a while is a remake of 64, the only game that actually put the series on the map.

Kirby Newcomer: None

Has everything it needs, Sakurai was uninvolved with Epic Yarn’s production and would be unlikely to acknowledge it. Nevermind how Epic Yarn Kirby would never get in over Paper Mario.

Mother Newcomer: None

Dead series is dead and is lucky to have 2 reps.

Fire Emblem Newcomer: None

I largely expected a generic advertisement for a new FE game to be in SSB4, but the time where SSB4 starts development is getting too near and there hasn’t been so much as a word uttered about it. The only new games since Brawl have been remakes of Marth’s games, and Marth largely represents them fine. Ike is the only other lord to star in 2 games besides Marth and has a unique moveset, thus he isn’t going anywhere either. Any other complaints directed towards this section can be directed to the fact that there is far, far, far too much competition within the series for a 3rd slot to come up with a remotely agreeable choice.

Golden Sun Newcomer: Isaac

Isaac recurs into a second game and is the one actually being requested, and Golden Sun is the most obvious series for a new character. The likes of Animal Crossing are unlikely to be represented in a 45 man roster due to Sakurai not thinking that any of the characters from the series can fight.

F-Zero Newcomer: None

The F-Zero series is far too dead, and Ganon’s status as a clone has pretty much become immortalized – Black Shadow won’t pop in and steal his moveset from him.

Pikmin Newcomer: None

Regardless of a Pikmin 3 being announced, that’s only the 3rd game in the series and Pikmin has a massive character shortage. Louie has nothing whatsoever to differentiate himself from Olimar.

Retro Newcomer: Little Mac

Punch Out can largely be considered retro considering it stayed dead for such a long time in order to need a series revival. Retro characters are there to fill up an obligatory tradition Sakurai has made, and are not going to take over the roster any time soon considering how insignificant and obscure they are.

Kid Icarus can be considered retro for the same reasons as Punch Out, and it’s a 3 game series – it’s not going to get a second rep. The main argument to get in Medusa/Magnus/etc is that Sakurai’s bias will cause him to include a character from the series regardless of its insignificance, but Sakurai specifically didn’t include Meta Knight and Dedede in Melee to avoid such bias. Sure, they both got in Brawl, but they both deserved to be in Brawl anyway, which cannot be said of a second Kid Icarus rep. Sure, he flooded the SSE with Kirby in Brawl, but this is only because it’s very obvious Sakurai sucks at writing stories and used characters he was more familiar with as a crutch.

Shock Newcomer: Duck Hunt Dog

Sakurai has done this god-awful tradition for 2 games already and it’s unlikely he’ll stop any time soon. The shock character cannot be classified as a generic retro addition, otherwise they are not a shock – the Ice Climbers passed as retro despite their massive obscurity. You really need something crazy for this slot, and the Duck Hunt Dog is the only thing particularly crazy and shocking while still being well known. An alternative to go with the retro console mascots is Diskun, but lord knows he has even less moveset potential than the dog.

3rd Party Newcomers: Megaman, Simon Belmont

Mega Man and Castlevania are two series with a long retro history on Nintendo consoles, making them the most obvious new series to include. Mega Man himself is all but confirmed when his creator has talked about wanting him in and Sakurai has talked about Capcom characters in a very recent interview. While 2 characters from the same 3rd party company may be awkward, one must keep in mind Sakurai’s relationship with Kojima and how it let –Snake- of all people into Brawl, the most undeserving 3rd party ever. Speaking of which, Snake and Sonic obviously aren’t going anywhere, considering they were some of Brawl’s main selling points.

Other Rejected Choices

Mii is the character I think is the most legitimate threat to get onto the roster, considering the fact that they have returned for the Wii-U and the new Mario game even has Miis in the title. If anything would be added it’d be this, and it was largely only kept out because of the fact Brawl won’t get more than 45 characters, seeing Sakurai’s development time is limited what with him having to work on a 3DS version of the game. There’s that, and there’s also the fact that I think Mii may get in without directly taking up a character slot, being able to be a clone of some of the more basic characters.

Starfy is the most valid new series to get into Smash, but is unfortunately hated by Sakurai because he ripped off his overwhelmingly creative brain-child Kirby. Other new series characters such as Saki and Ray 01 are after Starfy in priority considering his series is much larger, but Starfy and Tom Nook bottleneck them from getting in by being more important but not being able to get in due to Sakurai’s bias.

Kamek exists in Japan. It's a race just like Yoshi. And there's a main "Yoshi" and a main "Kamek." The main Kamek is repping his broom and using that pixie dust all the time. He also has the abilities of all the other magikoopas with his wand.

Why?

Because the alternative for a new Zelda character is a random Pokemon style flavor of the month character, and Zelda will inevitably get 5 to match Mario and Pokemon.
