Just throwing Corrin out there

I haven't played Fates yet, unfortunately. Is Corrin a good character, then?

He shows more character than Link ever did.

That is true. Its not really a compelling argument against it though.

Well, if they maybe instead improved Link's overall character and gave it more depth instead of considering changing his sex, we could really get something special instead of, "Wow... Link's a girl now"

Why not both? Changing his gender is only a drop in the pond compared to the work of improving his character.

Because if you must change the gender of a character in order for them to be relatable, then they weren't a very well written character, now were they?
Link is a character, but I feel like it's because of how generic he is at this point that people are asking for a gender change. Perhaps if Nintendo made an effort to improve his character then this fad will die out after Zelda U is released.

Not that difficult.
Link is a character, but I never said he had depth.
Turning him into a girl would not add more depth, and has a higher chance of him turning into an avatar than it does turning him into a more established character.

He's a silent protagonist he has no character. The only time he had character was in the two cdi games.

Corrins an avatar.
Corrin shows personality.

This completley nullifies your excuse of Link having personality=No avatar

The SMT games always have silent protagonists whose choices you decide, and yet they still undeniably have character. The same is true of Link. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

We can drop the assumption that the gender change is for the sake of relatability. Much easier to explain it by saying that it offers a different point of view, allows them to explore a new perspective with the character, etc. In this way, it would help in creating a well written character.

I'd argue that a generic or simple character is not necessarily a bad one, and that you're not so much suggesting that they improve his character as you are saying they should change it.
