Hi, I determined the Big Boss rank requirements for the first two Metal Gear games. I am talking about the two games originally released for the MSX. I could not find the correct information on the internet, so I am posting it here, in case anybody is eventually trying to achieve the Big Boss rank in these two games.

Hera are some tips for Metal Gear:
--------------------------
If you finish the game on easy, the best rank is fox.

How to save Time:
-----------------
The time limit is quite hard to pass, if you want to finish the game in less
than 45 minutes, you should prepare a fast route through the game. Maps found
online can help with that. You must skip Dr. Madnar and his daughter Ellen and
should not get unneccesary items. In order to avoid the mines, you have to
remember their position, because you cannot get the mine detector.
My best time is around 35 minutes.

Alerts:
-------
There are 8 mandatory alerts in the game and you must not be spotted more
times. These are the mandatory alerts:
-1x by the rocket guards on roof of building 1
-1x on the roof of building 2
-3x on the screen before building 3
-3x on the first screen in building 3

(On easy there are 9 mandatory alerts, because you are spotted 2 times on the
roof of building 1)

That means you cannot get the antidote, because that causes an alert.
To avoid the scorpions, move close the edge of the screen or kill them with
your machine gun.
It does not count as an alert, if you are spotted by
the guards guarding the silencer on floor 3 of building 1 or by
the guards before the elevator on floor 1 of building 2.

You also cannot get the ammuntion for the rocket launcher on the same floor
the rocket launcher is found.
The easiest place to get the ammunition is the basement.

Kills:
------
Avoid killing humans should be easy except for on the first screen of
building 3. You need to plant explosives there and if you are unlucky,
it kills a soldier. In that case you have to reload.
It does not count as a kill, if you kill a scorpion or a dog.
The four soldiers guarding the silencer can also be killed, they count as a
boss and do not respawn.

Rations:
--------
The hardest requirement next to the time limit is the number of rations used.
You should your use your only ration when you cross the electric floor before
Metal Gear. That means you must defeat the tank and traverse the roof of
building 2 without using any ration. The bulletproof vest helps a lot.
It is possible to finish the game using 0 rations, but that is quite
difficult.

Continues and Saves:
--------------------
You can save as often as you want, but are not allowed to use any continues to
achieve the Big Boss rank. Simply reload when you die.

And here are some tips for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
---------------------------------------------
If you finish the game on easy, the best rank is fox.
Metal Gear 2 is approximately twice as long as the first game, but the
requirements for the Big Boss rank are more lenient.

How to save time:
-----------------
You have to finish the game in less than 1:35:30, if you want to save time,
you should go to the freezer to obtain the key for Marv's locker when you
return to building 1 for the hang glider.

Alerts:
-------
There are 2 mandatory alerts, one on the long staircase in building 2 and one
at the end.
If you are unlucky, you are spotted in the rooms with the mannequins. You have
to traverse these rooms at least two times, thus you should only get a maximum
of 4 additional alerts and are still within the limit of 6 alerts.
You can avoid being spotted in the room with the 12 mannequins in three rows,
if you use your binoculars in the room before. The directions the mannequins
face is unique for the possible positions of the hidden soldiers. So you can
determine where you have to enter the screen to avoid being spotted.
You can also get the optional cassette tape for the second time you traverse
the rooms and you are not spotted.

Kills:
------
You should not kill any humans except for the very last screen. To finish the
game, you have to clear that screen. But you should wait around 20 seconds
before you shoot them, otherwise they start reappearing and you might end up
killing more than 5 guards.
The guards can also leave the screen by themselves, making it possible to
finish the game with 0 kills.

Rations:
--------
Don't use any rations. It does not count towards your number of used rations,
if you use them against the acid pools or if you have to use them in order to
drop them when you are burning after the Metal Gear fight.

Continues and Saves:
--------------------
You can save as often as you want, but are not allowed to use any continues to
achieve the Big Boss rank. Simply reload when you die.

Well done. a few things though.

You can skip the tank fight if you use damage invincibility from getting shot to walk through it.
I believe it's possible to not get seen on the roof of building 1. But I've never done it myself

BTW, what's your best time on MG2?
ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.

My best time in MG2 is around 1h15min, if I remember correctly. And I saved 6 times or so. But it is definitely possible to improve that time and I read that you were much better.

Regarding Metal Gear 1, I once saw that tank trick in a youtube video and it helps to save some time, but I can't perform it consistently (I haven't tried it often though).
I read as well that you can avoid being spotted on the roof of building 1, but I never managed it and think it is actually impossible. So the only allowed alerts are the mandatory ones.

BTW, i read some of your post about Metal Gear 2, before I tried to achieve the Big Boss rank and determine the exact requirements. And your tactics for some of the bosses helped a lot. Thanks for that Calintares.

Good to hear it helped someone, and thanks correcting my estimates on what it took to get BB. You should to put it in a FAQ or try to get this topic stickied so people will have easy access to the requirements.

We should do a race at some point.

I actually tried to submit a FAQ with the information I posted in this thread, but it was unfortunately rejected for being overspecialized. I could write a complete walkthrough containing the rank requirements, but you can find walkthroughs for the games already, that's why I just share this information in this thread.
