You don't need to upgrade any titles if you already purchased them. I went on this spree of upgrading games but it was worthless. All I got out of that were more save file slots if I loaded up the game in the Wii U emulator. You can still play the unupgraded version on the Wii menu. Upgrading doesn't do anything but give you a few more features that you may not need.

Features you get on the Wii U VC versions:

- The ability to play using the Gamepad or Wii U Pro Controller
- Remappable controls
- A save state feature

Having both versions does indeed give you double the save files.

Also, if you happen to be in Europe, you're more likely to get 50HZ versions on Wii VC, and 60HZ versions on Wii U VC.
