9 character roster (with 2 Pikachu's) is pretty pathetic at this day and age especially for a game that's probably more focusing on being a fan service fighter for pokemon fans, I really can't see anyone defending this.

Nine is pretty standard for a non-sequel fighter.

Look at the early entries of other fighters and compare (though typically this does not include fighters based on anime shows).

The difference is that today, fighting games have upwards of 20 characters.

I agree TC. I think Heracross and Lucario are no-brainers.
...this has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
Still waiting for my username to happen.

10 characters is all we need. The roster is fine as it is.

More will get announced before release. I'll guess there will be 14-16 at launch, with a possibility of a few more coming through DLC

and they are filled with clones. Soul sucking, nightmare inducing, fart melting clones. Which is why I enjoy games like Guilty Gear.
Although Mavel Vs Capcom has been good about about having a ton of characters and not many clones (but lets face it, in MvC 2 they pulled characters from 3 other capcom fighting games that had small rosters)
Currently Playing: Digimon Survive

We'll get more, They are just being held for the console release. To be fair I don't know how many characters a fighting game usually has in arcades, but I know that they like to keep it lower so people don't take forever to pick characters. They've already added dark mewtwo who I am sure will be playable in the console version.

They should add Dark Pit
(adds signature, or no one will read last line of text.)

Not really. Even those 40$ niche 2D fighters from poor Japanese developers usually have at least 12.
