Official announcement:
https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/prepare-to-embark-on-journeys-end.87442/

They already showed a screenshot of that menu earlier where you can pick the settings while making the world but now it's already been updated since then too.

That seems like a special difficulty setting under Normal so I'm guessing it's some sort of semi zen mode.

About time. Last week they said they were planning to release it in "the coming months", which I thought would be June at the earliest.

Yeah that was a really pleasant surprise to hear it was coming in a month. Seems like they've added an insane amount. I'm super excited.

A lot of people are speculating it is a sort of creative mode, which they've teased quite a bit since 1.3.

I can’t wait to play it. Really hope the Switch version gets this update before the end of the year. I mean I’m definitely playing on PC but some of my friends are Switch only.
Liu Yude got nothing on Dampe. He couldn't hope to survive that many chambers.

Chippy has an early video demonstrating Journey Mode, imagine terraria but with a disgaea cheat menu to play with:

@tiomasta hey my dude, sorry to ask this, but do you mind if I could get a quick summary of the video? I'm not really able to watch videos for a couple days and I'm kinda dying to know what journey mode is like.

I wasn't going to read about every new feature and item, but just the broad strokes look AMAZING. It's almost like a remake at this point. I'm just a little worried about all my old worlds though.

@EgoKiller801 So to summarize:
-You have to make a character as Journey mode first (Journey/Softcore/Medium/Hardcore), then it can only enter Journey mode worlds
-You start with iron tools, and torches and rope, a new lower summon weapon, and an extra-weak Wing already equipped
-Whenever you open the inventory screen you have a powers menu in the left you can open. Research&Duplication allows you to process any item you get so then you permanently can duplicate it at will out of nothing (apparently equipment can be researched right after you obtain them normally first, and materials take 100 of it first)
-You have a much extended building range which is toggeable, you can toggle evil/hallow spread off
-It lets you instantly force the current hour to whatever you want, or slow it down or speed it up. Also weather conditions
-It isn't actually set as lower difficulty than normal, because you have a slider to just pick whatever difficulty you want and change it in real time whenever you want (it still lets you get difficulty-specific drops). And you have a slider for monster spawn rates too, you can go low enough to completely disable them if you just want to build somewhere right now or you can play with as much as 10x the normal amount of monsters to drop something easier right now or do a really weird playthrough
-There's also a full-on godmode invincibility toggle on it, no restriction or anything, if you want it you have it. If you just wanted to be done with a boss you hate and can't beat, there you go. Or if you don't want to have it, there you go

It keeps being said that it's not intended as an official creative mode, sorta more like a "we'll put this on the table but you just go and play however you think you prefer" mode. As in, if you wanted to play it like a normal world for just some of the features and say your character isn't allowed to use the others willy-nilly, you could

@tiomasta thanks so much! I appreciate you doing this for me.

Sounds way more interesting than I thought it would be. Probably is a good idea that characters for Journey mode are limited to being in those worlds. Seems like it could be a fun mode to just mess around in.

Did you guys see this? I think it's amazing. It's unreal how much they've done for this update.

One thing I really like about it is that it's going to show actual drop chances on items.
