So I just beat this game and liked it, but after getting the A+ ending, aside from seeing Pamela that one time, I don't see what this has to do with the other games in the Dept Heaven, or even when it's happening. (I know Riviera is chronologically the last, Yggdra the first, and Knights is somewhere in between them)

I dunno, did I miss something? I mean, I have only barely started Knights in the Nightmare, so maybe the connection would be easier to see if I had played that, but I didn't really see anything tying it to Riviera or Yggdra Union. Can you guys help me out?

...please let someone be around to see this...

Connections between each Dept Heaven, especially chronologically, is vague as f***, so it's okay to be confused. The only thing riviera-ish in YU was the extra stage in the PSP game and the name of some weapons, for example, and Yggdra is one of the selectable protag in Knights, though it was never told whether this was canon or not (her story is the same as Maria). That said, though, Gungnir is pretty much that one kid you forgot even existed in your class. It's too bound into its own worlds to be connected to Dept Heaven, but we connect it anyways since the devs said so.

It's like they each take place in different worlds, but still the same universe. somehow. It's like if SE suddenly announced "Hey, FF7 and 9 takes place in the same universe" then all the fans went bats*** crazy trying to find all the vague relations and references like chocobos. or moogles. or that one summon.

Also, Riviera is episode 1, yggdra is 2, KitN is 4 while Gungnir is 9. actual official statement. Don't remember whether they stated that the episode numberings is based chronologically though. Ep 3 was some cancelled MMO.

Wait, you don't think Final Fantasy 7 and 9 are happening in the same world!? I thought the connections were obvious!

Nah, just kidding. That's probably just me. But anyway, My belief that Yggdra Union comes first chronologically, and Riviera last comes from what I read on TV Tropes, which not only says that the episode numbers have nothing to do with chronology, but it also says on the page of each game when the game happens, with the strange exception of Gungnir.

Yggdra happening at least before Riviera makes sense to me if only because of Marietta showing up at the end. She is supposed to be that Archangel you fight and kill in Riviera, isn't she? Also, I don't know if anything in Battlefield 49 of is supposed to mean anything or if any of the information in it is canon, but we see one of Hector's Grim Angel experiments and they talk about him as if he's still alive.

I'm still at the beginning Knights in the Nightmare, though, so while it's said that it happens in-between Yggdra and Riviera, I don't know how it connects yet.

Oh, you're just beginning KitN? Have fun lol, it's still a pretty fun game through and through with the gameplay. PSP ver?
No spoilers, but KitN only adds to the confusion. There are different story routes and endings but they're so strict you might have to see a walkthrough the second time in. the first time through I didn't even REALIZE there was a choice, hence ending with me saying what the f***

YEah, YU being first and Riviera being last makes the most sense, since Riviera ends on pretty much the happiest note out of all of Heaven and resolved everything. BUT THEN WHAT ABOUT THE WACKY EPISODE NUMBERINGS, STING. it's street fighters all over again!

I'm guessing, a very wild guess at that, that every other Heaven games just explains or even stretches out what occurs in Riviera. Once you finish KitN you'll see how ridiculous the connections are lol. It's like they made an entire game and story out of a single plot point in R.

And then there's the way worlds work in this franchise. Asgard and utgard, with "lol various game worlds" slapped in between. It... almost sounded like an excuse to make possibly limitless other Dept Heaven upcoming games.

tl;dr basically nothing in Dept Heaven gets a very solid answer, bar riviera as a standalone title. Hell, gungnir ended on a cliffhanger (and YU depending on your choice)...

I'm playing the PSP version of KitN, yeah. I can play as Yggdra since I have the Yggdra Union data on my memory stick but I decided to play as Maria anyway.

I'll try to go through the game pretty much blind this first time, then after that play it properly with the help of a walkthrough.

Yis yis, that's the nice way to go. KitN's actually pretty fun, still got that Sting-tier restrictive gameplay and linearity but it's just... strangely fun. You pay attention to like 5 things at once lol.

I read a developer interview the cliffhanger in Gungnir was due to budget and running out of time. There was supposed to be alot more Asgard content. A sequel was an idea that I guess due to poor sales never materialized. A shame as I liked this one even more than YU.

I personally preferred Yggdra Union but I did really enjoy this game and would welcome a sequel.
The chances of that don't look high, though. I'm starting to doubt if we'll see another entry in the Dept Heaven series at all, since it's been what, four years since this one?

Yeah Dept. Heaven games stopped once they merged with Idea Factory. After Gungnir they worked on the last Generation of Chaos game which was actually decent. SRPG's are kind of fading so it might be a long while before they come back.

They didn't exactly merge. Super Sting is an equal stake partnership.

They also haven't been working exclusively with IF since, as they've also done some games like Dungeon Travelers 2 (and it's upcoming sequel).

Can't really deny that Dept. Heaven games have completely disappeared since then, though.
Even at his most powerless, man's existence is never without meaning.
