So this is my first time on PC skyrim and I'm getting into modding. Now I watched a video about mod manager and so forth and got to the part where I start downloading mods with it

I chose Alternate Start since that would be a mod I could see the effects asap but when I downloaded it and activated it in NMM the game auto closes before it gets to the main screen. Tried 3 different times but it doesn't get past the Bethesda title.

After uninstalling the mod the game booted up like normal. Did I miss a step or something?
Merry Christmas

Well, crashes of the type you describe are often due to missing masters.

Live Another Life requires all 3 of the DLC's (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn) to be loaded before it.

If you have all three of these DLCs, then make sure you downloaded Live Another Life for the right game:

Like if you are playing the original Skyrim (Legendary Edition) and DL'd Live Another Life for Skyrim Special Edition, then you are probably going to get CDT's like you described.

As an aside, if you are playing Skyrim Legendary Edition, I highly suggest you use Mod Organizer instead of NMM.

ah hell i only have the base game. wasn't planning on getting the DLCs till later. So that's the only way to get LAL to work?

A LOT of mods require one or more of the DLC's. Pay attention when reading the description and requirements. A lot of them require the Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) also.

Use the Unofficial Skyrim Patch (USKP) rather than the Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition (USLEEP). Although USKP for the base game is no longer being updated, it still fixes a LOT of bugs in Bethesda's code and will make your game more stable. There are also stand-alone Unofficial Patches for each DLC, use them when you start adding the DLC. Once you get the third DLC installed, you can ditch USKP and the standalone DLC patches and use USLEEP.

While MO is more versatile/powerful than NMM, it also has a steeper learning curve. There are MO and NMM users that are like some Dodge, Ford or Chevy fans - they'll argue the merits of their fave until 2077 and the Atomic War. I tried MO and wasn't that impressed. *shrugs*

I've used NMM since I got the game (over 6 years ago and more than 1000 hours logged), and the only issue I've had with it was when they did the major re-write of how it functions when the .6x version was released. That totally fubar'd my game. Uninstall, reinstall, reinstall my mods, activated them and smooth sailing ever since. I've had over a hundred mods installed with NMM. Both tools work, either one will do what you want done. If you think you'll end up with 250 - 260 mods go ahead and start learning MO. If you think you'll end up with 70 - 100, stay simple and use NMM.

Pay attention to the installation guide for the mod, and use Load Order Optimization Tool (LOOT) when you start installing several mods. LOOT does a pretty bang-up job of basic load structure, but isn't 100% because lets face it, no one is going to keep up with all the mods released on an almost daily basis. It also spots conflicts and can make recommendations and directs you to TES5Edit to fix buggy code and dirty edits in mods.

If you want to get real hands on with your modding - get Wrye Bash - amazing tool that lets you create your own patches to fix mod conflicts. This is what creates the "bashed patches" you will read about when learning how to fix load order issues and conflicting mods.

Good luck and welcome to Skyrim!
Hah! You kids these days got it easy. I started playing video games with PONG. Now THAT was a video game! And get off my lawn!

The most recent version, yes. If you go to it's page on the nexus, there is an older version that doesn't require the DLCs.

Or you could look at Skyrim Unbound. It doesn't require the DLCs and is rather similar to LAL.

I've never used the SKSE on Steam, I've always used the manual install version: http://skse.silverlock.org

It's a zip file, unpack it, and read the readme.txt for installation instructions. You copy three files to your game folder, the next time you run NMM it should detect it. Upper left corner where Launch Skyrim is, click the drop down arrow, and it should have the option to launch SKSE.

If you use the Steam version, I'm not sure how that installs and launches in NMM.

okay so I installed the SKSE. I bought all the DLC and tried to install the USLEEP but I'm still getting the crash at the Bethesda screen. I'm launching the game from the SKSE. Is there anything else I need to install? I checked the recommended for both mods and i believe i have all the requirements. The game from steam should be the most up to date version of oldrim right?

open skse from nexus mod manager
if the game crash...it will tell you what mods your missing & you can see the missing stuff in red collard text names in your available mods screen

also your modding & trying to fix a really heavily broken unfinished game at the same time
