A real thief has a single dagger when stabbing someone becomes a necessity and some vials of poison and invisibility.

Conceptual "Thief" skills in order of importance:

1) Sneak, Lockpick and Pickpocket (a skill in any one of these could make you a living as a thief)
2) Speech
3) Combat skills (one-handed, archery, armor)
4) Alchemy

Alchemy is a profession, some thieves dabble in it, but a lot more just buy their potions and poisons. Naturally, amongst thieves there are those who are more combat-inclined, and your Dragonborn will likely be one unless you heavy with the RP.

Archery's been overdone to death, if I wanted to play "normally" but still with RP flavor, I'd go 1h dagger and sneak, and hit the major towns for break-ins at night and some pickpocketing early. Normally you'd just clear some bandit dungeons and wander the world, but hitting the towns early in order to make some gold with your criminal skills since you're pooor af could be fun.
What a superb demon!

The Black Book power seeker of might under the warrior side still affects bow damage though. Sheogorath made this game if know one knows lol.

Not to mention the Bards College quests that reward mage, thief, and warrior skills reward archery along with the rest of the warrior skills, and light armor along with the rest of the thief skills, as does the Oghma Infinium. I think archery being covered by thief stone was just a f*** up.

It was lol.

If you want a fun one do one where you play as an actual thief and not a murderer. If you have to murder someone do it in indirect means. Use archery for non-human things.

Also I think in the context of this game being a thief would not be mutually exclusive with illusion magic or paralyze spells

Incidentally, the only combat skill that relies solely within the thief skills is reverse pickpocketing. As such, pure thieves should probably avoid actual combat as much as possible.

That's the stupidest thing i've ever heard!

First of all relaying solely on stealth or just sneaking would only get you so far. No matter what gimmicky build your planning, at least you need some offensive skill in case combat isn't an option. Anyone who actually attempt a no combat run especially in this game is either clueless, delusional or just masochistic. It's even worst that people like you frequently suggesting terrible build ideas and arrogantly treat you "advice" like its the gospel which no sane individual would actually agree.

To the op:

It's actually a very good idea to equip a weapon skill on your build since at least you'll be prepared when you'll be in open combat against hostiles. And in case anyone tries to say that it violates any so called rules i'll just say i've seen "pure mage" builds with the alchemy skill included.

All he did was state some facts and some point of view. Didn't fight anybody on how he was right and they were wrong.

You, on the other hand, come in here calling things stupid, clueless, delusional, and arrogant. Get out.

Everybody in the Thieves Guild has a weapon they pull out if you aggro them, yeah? Or close enough. Skyrim's a harsh and dangerous land. Only a fool would wander around without a weapon.

fists are weapons. just sayin'.
Will remove this when japanese game developers stop treating western gamers as test subjects for their games.

The assumption that magic is only for mages, or that archery is only for warriors, is where this whole thread goes wrong. An intelligent thief uses what is useful to him and, like any dyed in the wool rogue, ignores what he doesn't care for, like laws and rules. Archery and magic are very much useful to thieves, and who was the fool that was surpised at thieves using light armour? Light armour IS the armour of thieves, in general, but there's nothing but stubborn pigheadedness that says a thief can't use heavy armour or cloth if he so chooses (and is prepared to deal with the negatives, such as the sneaking penalty for heavy or the utter lack of protection provided by cloth).

Free your mind.

Free your mind, but also understand that definitions must be limited to have meaning. By your words, a rogue or thief could be anything at all, and so it renders the question of the topic pointless, or at least ignores the context of the topic.
