What about Light's, with the foldable blade?

Why can't it function in real life?

If anything, Lightning's is less believable. Squall's doesn't even fire bullets.

Why can't it function in real life?

Because anytime you pulled the trigger while slashing, the whole thing would violently vibrate, and shatter your wrist.

I believe it was said that Squall's fires magic bullets or something like that.

EDIT

Sorry, not fires, more like explodes.

WHAT? Squall's gunblade creates explosions on impact. Lightning gunblade shifts between sword & gun.

If there was material inside the Gunblade where the bullet would go that would stop the bullet, and if the bullets were of a low caliber , then maybe. It should be well noted that in VIII gunblades were used as training swords (Laguna mentioned this in the scene where he wears his DLC). Reason being, the vibration of the sword requires the welder to have proper for or risk injury. Swing the weapon and pull the trigger without locking your wrist and elbow and the results won't be forgotten. Most trainees are very glad to switch to a more conventional weapon after they are done learning with it. This makes it ideal for Squall. Since he doesn't want to think too much, he chooses a weapon that requires absolute control and concentration to use. That and he's notoriously stubborn (though not quite as hard-headed as Lightning. It all goes back to the double standard; women can criticize the flaws in men all they want, but the second the roles flip all hell breaks loose).

Laguna mentions that he used it in training in the army, not that they were used specifically as training swords. BIG difference, especially considering that it's noted Gunblades are notoriously hard to master. They seem to be known, though, so that implies that whatever training Laguna got was mostly identifying the weapon and knowing what it does, rather than actually knowing how to properly use it.

In all likelihood, Laguna was either trained without pulling the trigger or they used smaller caliber bullets.

Anyways, Lightning's Gunblade is more practical/useable, if only because it also functions as a gun allowing you to have some diversity. However, it would seem the whole thing would be a little brittle and would need to be maintained constantly because of all the moving parts.

Squall's Gunblade would probably shatter your wrist and/or pop your arm out of the socket in addition to most likely disassemble itself. You'd be better of using a chainsaw or something >_>.

Squall's would break your wrist.

Lightning's probably would fall apart.
