With most of the team back and rested from their various holidays over the New Zealand summer, we wanted to give you an update on what the plan is for Path of Exile's development for this year.

2019 will see the release of four significant Path of Exile updates, in the form of 3.6.0 in March, 3.7.0 in June, 3.8.0 in September and 3.9.0 in December. These releases will follow the formula we have been using over the last few years, introducing a challenge league, various expansion features, new character skills/archetypes to play and masses of other fixes and quality of life improvements.

While working on the 2019 updates, we also hope to make significant progress on the 4.0.0 mega-expansion, likely coming sometime in 2020. For those unfamiliar with our version numbering system, once we have released update 3.9.0, we aren't forced to number the next one 4.0.0. For example, the version after 3.9.0 (March 2020) is 3.10.0, as we do not expect to release 4.0.0 in the first part of next year.

Development of 4.0.0 is a massive task and is absolutely affected by our desire to continue to release sizeable leagues at our usual pace, so we are taking our time and making sure it's ready before we decide on a release date.

2019 culminates in the ExileCon fan convention in November, where we can announce and demonstrate December's 3.9.0 expansion as well as a small preview of 4.0.0. This convention takes place approximately 2-3 weeks before the 3.9.0 release, so you should be able to play a near-final build at the show. We expect to put tickets up for sale in the next couple of weeks.

We are also putting the finishing touches on the PlayStation 4 version of Path of Exile, and should be able to announce a release date in the near future.

It's certainly going to be a busy year. Expect to hear more news about 2019's first expansion, version 3.6.0, in around a month!

- Hype! Great to see they've already got a roadmap set out for them. Looks like the game's gonna continue being a juggernaut with new content updates to play. But damn, if 2018's Leagues were referred to as "third-generation" Leagues by GGG, I can't imagine what sorts of crazy things they got planned for 2019.

- I wonder how they're gonna do the inevitably virtual E-ticket stream when unveiling the 4.0.0 expansion. Maybe bundled with a Pack or something. Maybe something like the old school Beta timer that gives one away every X hours.

I want to play this game on ps4, because I'm going blind and that tv is much bigger and easier for me to see, but I'm not sure that I can get along without trade macro.

I wonder how trading is going to be handled on ps4.

I didn't know that Poe has it's own convention. That is pretty impressive.
Goodbye, beloved friend. One day soon, I will see you again.

Yup, should be sometime mid-February as they've teased, though since it's creeping up pretty fast I'd imagine they will set a specific date within a week or so. As for Trading, probably uses the same thing as the Xbox One version - a Trade Board type of thing.

And yeah, this is only the very first time they're hosting ExileCon, so it does sound like a big deal if they've garnered enough money/popularity to warrant holding a convention. Best part is that they'll probably follow the format of a free stream for the first hour or so of the convention to showcase all of the major features of 3.9.0 and even 4.0.0, then later, all of the streamers/super-fans that actually attend ExileCon will likely be compiling all of the minor information and posting it.

I will definitely watch such a stream, and if I was anywhere in the near vicinity of such a convention, I think I would go.

I don't see why not, I'd love to meet some of the people behind the game and of course watch a bunch of cool poe stuff, which I am sure there would be plenty of.

I am really interested to see where they are taking this game, and also in that I understand they are remaking the entire game from scratch. At least in terms of appearance, I presume.

Same here.

And yeah, that's basically the best part of "X.0.0" expansions the game has received thus far - they always go above and beyond what everyone's expecting with things that affect the game forever, which pretty much pushes the game into a new era. Dunno if you played the game back then, but nobody was expecting them to remove desync in 2.0.0 or add six Acts in 3.0.0.

The only real information we have so far regarding 4.0.0 is:

@38:20 - Combat Feel is heavily related to by rigs on animations, and there has been a multi-year effort to improve Combat Feel by making new character models with new rigs, which will be happening in 4.0.0. Things are going to improve A LOT when that happens. The technology has improved A LOT since 2006 when they first made the character models, such that it is much easier to share rigs across different characters. So now they don't need to make a "Marauder" rig. They can just make a "large male" rig, and a "medium female" rig. (Hinting at the possibility of being able to select different genders for Classes). Even new monsters and bosses in 4.0.0 will use the new rigging tech.

@40:15 - When you make new rigs, you have to remake every Armor in the game to re-rig them to those rigs. This is why this has been a mammoth effort. One of the results of redoing rigging is that all of the animations are going to be much better, especiall Combat Fundamentals, especially the feeling of hitting something.

Very accurately so, too. Not sure if you caught the Dropped Frames podcast episode a month ago where Chris was actually on it, but he said:

52:48 - There will never be a Path of Exile 2. They are just going to keep improving Path of Exile in such a way that it becomes 2, 3, 4, etc. over the course of its entire lifetime. You can argue that they are already on "Path of Exile 3" atm. When they mentioned that they are developing v4.0.0 to compete with Diablo 4, they mean that if Diablo 4 releases in Year 2020 let's say, it will have Year 2020 assets/polish/looks/etc. In order to compete with that, PoE needs to have a consistent quality throughout the game, which can mean revamping assets, character models, etc. to the point where there's no inconsistency, ie. All of the small bits and pieces from early development in say 2009 that are still in the game get updated (like character models).

Yeah my gear is not that great anymore. I got this pc back in 2013, still running 680 gtx on it on a 22" 1080p monitor.

My ps4 pro is hooked up to 55" 4k tv, so that makes things much easier for me to see. I'm going to have cataract surgery on my left eye in April. I'm going blind, and getting old sucks!

I could change up my pc gear right now and just stay on pc, but damn I'm so lazy and cheap.

I started playing this game very shortly after Diablo 3 started failing after its release.

I'd estimate that at about 1-1.5 months after Diablo 3 came out.Basically what happened was they started removing content from the game, such as little side areas they said people were farming too much, so I was like, uh no, I'm out. Switched to POE.

At that time, Vaal was the last boss, the Pyramid was the last level.

I played it heavily, but also only causally. I was never really very good at it.

My current build is Winter Orb Elementalist, I'm lvl 90, dunno if I'll get higher than that in this league, because it gets very hard to not die to the Syndicate map after map. So far I've done up to t14 maps in my Tabula Rasa, which is the best I've ever done.

But damn this game is a blast, so totally addictive!
