NOTE: effect of martial score and tech will be ignored as it is assumed this is equal across all cases and up to you to breed the best mutant commander. Generic skirmish is ignored as it only lasts 3 days. "Gimmick" stacks that can be countered (like 100% longbows) are not considered.

I've been working on crunching the numbers for abusing tactics as much as possible. Here are my results, for the 'best' retinue selections:

English Longbow/Pikemen
Formula: 2 divisions of pikemen for every 1 division of longbowmen, plus 1-2 extra pike divisions.
41% Pikemen, 59% archers.
Force of 10,000 (10 defensive+4 longbow) will contain:
3000 pikemen
4000 archers
7000 men.

Always use an English commander.
Tactics:
Skirmish
Volley: 300% archer damage (~40%)
Massive Volley: 420% archer damage (~60%)

Damage:
1.5 (retinue)x4.20(tactic)x5(base)x.015 (combat)x4000 (troops)=1890 damage, 31.5 attack.
Defense: 5/3

Melee
Barrage: 240% archer damage in melee.
Standfast: (in woods): 300% pike damage in melee.

Damage:
Archers: 2.4x1.5x1x.015x4000=216 damage per day.
Pikemen: 5x.015x4000=300 damage per day. 900 per day in woods.
=516 damage per day.
Defense: 2 (archers), 8 (pikemen)

Scottish Pikemen/Heavy Infantry (can be Italian, but will be weaker)
Formula: 3 divisions of Schiltrons/Pikes for every 1 division of shock. No leftovers.
75% pikemen, 20% heavy infantry, 5% archers.
Force of 10000 will contain (reduced from 11700 points for even distribution):
3735 pikemen
996 heavy infantry
249 archers
4980 men

Alwaysuse a scottish commander even if you are Italian.

Tactics:
Skirmish
Shieldwall: 300% heavy infantry defense, 240% pike defense. 60% archer attack.
Charge- change to melee phase. Very rare.

Damage: 5x1.6x.015x249=29.88 damage, 8 attack.
Defense: 1.6x2.4x5=19.2 pike defense.

Melee:
Schiltron: 360% pike defense, 240% pike offense. 5x2.4=12 attack.
Damage: 5x2.4x.015x3735=672.5 damage, 12 attack
Defense: 8x3.6x1.6=44.8 defense

Greek Cataphracts
Formula: All cataphracts. Anything else dilutes tactics. 40% horse archer, 60% heavy cavalry. A force of 10000 points would contain:
1800 heavy cavalry
1200 horse archers
=3000 men.

Tactics:
Skirmish
Swarm: 300% horse archer damage.
Swarm Harass: 240% horse archer damage (much less likely).
Charge (after 10 days)- Switch to melee. Likely.

Damage: 4x1.3x3x1200x.015=280.8 damage, 15.6 attack
Defense: 4/8

Melee:
Embolon Charge Formation: 240% knight attack
Awesome charge: 300% knight attack
Damage: 10x1.3x3x1800x.015=1053 damage, 39 attack
Defense: 8


Note: I left out the trivial contributions of support units in phases where they are not relevant.

All 3 of these retinues are exceedingly likely to destroy levies twice their size or more with minimal casualties due to the tremendous multipliers on their attack and defense scores. Against one another:

-Cataphracts would never make it to melee vs longbows
-Schiltrons would not finish longbows in one melee round and would lose in a second skirmish round
-Schiltrons would grind cataphracts down, likely over course of 2 melee rounds, but cataphracts can escape as infantry cannot pursue.

So I ranked them accordingly. Fortunately for the player, the best pitched battle force is also the best siege force.

no. there is nothing to expand upon. all other cultures are grossly inferior.

the other cultures are best off copying the english and producing a retinue with a 1:1 ratio of skirmisher retinues to defensive retinues.

this will yield a ratio of 60% archers/30% pikemen/10% heavy infantry. add one more defensive retinue to this and you knock HI just under 10%, preventing feint/shieldwall skirmish tactics, and archers below 60%, protecting against 'charge undefended flank' tactics.

use breeding to acquire an english commander if possible, otherwise anyone else will always use the volley tactic. most battles should end before melee phase.

as a note, it may be worth going 100% pikemen (schiltron/italian pikes) to ensure in melee your scottish general always uses schiltron formation; otherwise he will only use it 42% of the time.
