I'm still surprised at how the Super NES could handle real-time 3D shadows Star Fox

This being one of the very few truly 3D games out on the Super NES at the time. They managed to not only achieve three-dimensional gameplay, but also real-time shadows. The shadow of Fox's Arwing actually matches what it looks like, which is quite impressive. Most games would have only a nondescript black blob serving as the shadow (even Final Fantasy X on the PS2 in 2001 did this), but this game really went all out. How difficult exactly was this for Nintendo to accomplish?
