He has blond hair in official art and commercials.

Why couldn't they give him blond hair? They gave him an adorable shade of pink.

This was 16 bit. Does it have to do with palette problems?
Signatures are boring.

From what I understand it was palette problems with the color brown. Remember that back when LTTP came out link's hair was still brown (as it was in Zelda 1 and 2), and apparently having brown hair in this game blended in too much with any brown backgrounds, so they made it pink to stand out more. I could be completely wrong, but I remember reading this somewhere and it makes sense to me.

Well, there is a glitch that can give him brown hair, but that explanation of it sounds like more crap cooked up by Nintendo. Remember, Link ain't the only one with funky hair color in this game. Look at each of the people you come across. Notice some others with funky colors? In Zeldas 1 and 2, people were pretty "normal", but this game does the same sort of thing like the Dragon Warrior series, along with many other games that went with odd punky hair colors for unknown reasons.

So I guess the best answer to the question of "Why pink?" is "Why not pink?"

Actually, the explaination I heard was that the pink color was originally caused by a glitch while they were still making the game, but Miyamoto thought it looked good, so they kept it.

It looks like a dirty blonde in both his original artwork and the new one.
