Topic says it all.

My strategy remains unchanged since the old days. Perfect run up the end, and hope to god all 4 lives are enough for me finish him. I have somewhere around a 80% success ratio like this.
And that's how you do it.

Pause buffer while moving up and down usually works for me as far as predicting his moves. That's a tedious strategy, though... I use it more so when I'm low on lives and as a defense when he's invisible.

I tend to just gamble a jump kick opener as he gets close. If he does the handstand kick I can usually get in, otherwise I take a Zangief spin in the face and start over. If I can get a jump kick in, I just combo him with more jump kicks (sometimes uppercuts) as he gets up.

I gotta admit that I'm not incredibly consistent vs. this boss, though. Probably the hardest part of the game for me.
And this time!

Definitely most difficult for me. I'm pretty comfortable fighting any other enemy, cyclone kick is my most used attack, and it doesn't seem to be very safe with him.

Was watching Sinister's stream today (he speedruns a variety of games including DD2), and he mentioned a strategy for Shadow Master that seems consistent: mashing either punch or kick as fast as you can. According to Sin, he can't do much about that.

I'll try it later.

I tried the punch/kick mashing strat but couldn't do it. Maybe I don't mash fast enough.

However, I watched Sinister's stream again and his strat seems pretty consistent if you're decent at performing the knee attack: jump away from the boss as he approaches, then knee him. Repeat. He can't do much about it. Gotta try that one later.

Don't mash fast, mash at the proper timing instead..

Also, I may have to try this knee strategy too.
And that's how you do it.

I've beaten the game a couple more times since and I tested the knee strat. It's very good, but again, only as good as you are with the knee timing. If I miss the knee I usually get punished hard.

It's also best to start jumping a bit earlier than you think you're supposed to. If you jump when the boss is right next to you, he'll probably backflip away from you. You have to time the jump so that when you land, the boss will be at knee range.

I like this strategy because it makes real short work of the boss. Just a few knees are enough to trigger the second phase.

More runs done... and I'm getting better at this fight. Probably has something to do with getting better at the knee in general, but hey. Even finished the game without losing lives that last time.

Moving up/down is still my preferred strategy for avoiding him when he disappears. Maybe throw a cyclone kick as you move up/down.
