  3. Why a character like Piranha Plant was a perfect fit for that pre-order DLC

Games, especially fighting games, are prone tobeither give the pre-order/early buyer something either useless (skins) or something awesome everyone wants (a much requested character). The former is boring and cosmetics, the latter is frustrating and shady.

If the Piranha Plant DLC was instead a highly requested fan favourite, people would call foul on that. Because Nintendo and Sakurai were lazy and greedy and didn't finish said character for the release, and now only a special few will get to enjoy the character for free... but three months from the initial release (OUTRAGEOUS). I remember vividly Mewtwo's Smash 4 reveal. Sure, there was hype. But there was lots of whine with it.

Now, instead of speculating on why Plant Boi was chosen, one can talk about how the moveset and model emulate so much creativity and character. This was the one time Sakurai and his team could make a wacky character, a complete off the wall character. Add something like Piranha Plant in the roster, and people will whine. Add it in one of the 5 DLC spots, and people will cry. Now this is just a bonus and a chance for the team to introduce something unique that isn't a super serial humanoid character, something goofy.

I understand that people want other things. I want Bomberman, Skull Kid, Dixie, Captain Toad, Elma and so on so forth. But being mad about a bonus in this context is pretty meh tbh

Yeah I'm really glad they s*** on Petey Piranha so that they could goad more people into buying the game early.

I get your logic because it's lame when they offer up a major character to twist peoples' arms, but even within the realm of "goofy characters people weren't exactly dying for but that would still be cool bonuses" there were much, much better options.

Making him nothing but a SSE reference while his mook is fully playable is s***ting on him. I've wanted to play as Petey since pre-Brawl.

Do they? It looks like it was only made because it's so easy to animate, (it's "running" animation is super lazy, and it has no face which makes animating its barely-there expressions much easier) it has literally no personality to speak of, and the moveset is neat and I like that one stretch move (which Petey easily could've had by using one of his minions) but it's not particularly mind-blowing or anything. Its recovery especially is stupid and completely made up basically because they couldn't be bothered to figure out something that piranha plants actually do that could work as a recovery.

Incineroar has a lot of creativity and character. His heel role comes through strongly in his animations and several of his specials are entirely unique mechanically. Piranha plant just looks kind of okay at best, and to me that's definitely not worth crapping all over one of the most recurring Mario villains for. Especially since, again, Petey could do everything PP could do and more, plus he'd have more of an actual defined personality, abilities specific to himself, and much more natural-looking animations.

It's a pot with little root feeties poking out from underneath. While the head sways eagerly with the tongue dangling out. What do you want, it to grow a whole sentient vine forest? How is this any better or worse than any other animation? Especially the characters with stubby/nonexistant legs like Dedede n Toon Link. Or the ones that strike a pose and fly/float like Rosalina n Cloud?

yeah but that was stupid from the start and they clearly only did that so that they could, nearly 30 years down the line, point to the plant in Smash and go "its recovery move has a legitimate origin"

my favourite thing that some folks fail to grasp is that, the Piranha Plant has been around since 1985, being a enemy type that has seen many many many variations and evolutions over the decades with a wealth of stuff to pull from

completely made up

Falcon Punch
Green Missile
Fox Illusion
Peach Bomber
Needle Storm

i could honestly go on as many fighter have tons of made up moves and Piranha Plant isn't actually one of them hell in the case of Captain Falcon his entire moveset sans FS is basically just made up, Sheik's only "canon" moves are vanish and the now gone transform
