They say that is one eternal sin and we will go to hell/outer darkness for it. But would people really do that? Who would? Will we know who did and did not?

Of course. First of all, truth and morality are subjective, and even supposing that there is one God, not everyone need agree with him. Accepting that grace might compromise one's own independent beliefs.

But mostly, I imagine it would be a matter of pride.

For every guilty person who accepts his offer of advocacy and help... no guilty person in his right mind would reject such an offer: every single guilty person would wish to be judged as an exception, as a case involving mitigating circumstances.

But the person would have to accept the fact that he was, on his own, guilty.

How is truth subjective?
