Introduction

Welcome to the main thread for Dragon Quest Cosmos! DQC is a board-based game drawing from the original Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior, with added elements from DW2 and DW3 (and maybe even more...?) for greater variety in gameplay options. Each player controls a single "Descendant of Erdrick" attempting to slay the Dragonlord and prove his/her heritage. You can interact with other players by forming parties, challenging to duels, competing for possession of rare items, etc. Could you be the true Descendant of Erdrick?

Abbreviated Rules

Gameplay

--Gameplay is pretty straightforward: A round of gameplay consists of each player choosing an appropriate action, followed by an update of the game's status, usually by zenithian66. Updates are scheduled to occur on Mondays and Thursdays.

--Role-playing is welcomed and encouraged, but not expected. Quiet players are players too! ^_^

--If you miss your command, we can cover for you in the short term, but if you appear to have abandoned your character, s/he will run back to the nearest town and hide until you return. :-P

--If you will be absent for several updates, feel free to grant temporary control of your character to another member of your party, or any other player willing to accept the controller from you!

General
--Each player will control a single character. You are free to form parties, go on quests, fight amongst yourselves, etc.

--Stat builds for each character are determined, as in the original game, by the character's name. However, I will be using my own algorithm, so consulting with the game will not give the results you expect.

--Along with the addition of player parties, there will also be monster parties. Beware of Starwyvern hordes! ;-)

--XP and GP rewards are identical to true Dragon Quest, but are adjusted by a multiplier based on the number of live characters in the current party. This multiplier is equal to 4 / x , where x is the number of characters. Examples:
----For a solo party, the reward is multiplied by 4
----For a party of 2, the multiplier is 2
----For a party of 3, the multiplier is 4/3
----For a party of 4, the reward is multiplied by 1
For larger parties, the multiplier will be less than 1, but follows the same formula.

--Mechanics and stat growth will be similar to true Dragon Warrior. However, as the game progresses, unforeseen areas of imbalance are bound to occur, and they will (hopefully) be fixed when they do. (Note that this whole system is a work in progress, so player input on mechanics will be vital to its success!)

--Character inventories have a maximum size of 6, excluding equipped weapons, armor, shields, and helmets. Accessories still take up inventory slots, as do weapons/armor/etc. that are not equipped. Equipment may be changed during battle, but may require a turn to do so. Herbs and Keys are counted individually. Additional inventory space can be granted upon completion of the 'Bag End' quest in Kol.

--New quests, monsters, jobs, skills, and items will be introduced. More on those later!

Death
--If your character dies, and your party is unable to immediately revive you, you have the option either:
1) to remain dead, incurring the XP penalty only (don't worry, it will rarely be more than 1-2 battles' worth of XP), until the party can return to town and pay a priest (fee will increase linearly with the player's level), or
2) to respawn immediately at Tantegel, incurring the XP and GP penalties. Full-party defeat automatically incurs both penalties, since there is no recourse but to respawn.

--The XP penalty for death is 10% of the total amount needed for the next level. Ex: Say you have 1500 XP, (LV9), when you are killed in battle. If LV9 occurs at 1300 XP, and LV10 occurs at 2000 XP, you would lose 70: 10% of 700. You will not lose a level if this puts you under the threshold for your current level. This penalty will not occur if your party is able to revive you during or immediately following a battle. You will incur an additional penalty if you die again before paying back what you originally lost but the sum of XP penalties will never cause you to lose a level.

--The GP penalty for a death is 50% of GP. This penalty also will not occur if your party is able to revive you during or immediately following a battle. However, it is cumulative, meaning that if your character dies again, your GP will again be halved.

Jobs
--Upon reaching Lv5, players are eligible to choose between the jobs Ranger, Soldier, Fighter, Priest, and Wizard. This change will take effect as soon as the current quest is complete. Players who are undecided on a job class will continue to accrue XP, but future level-ups will be placed on hold until a job is declared. Once you choose a job, it is yours for life. It is still recommended that characters speak with the Templar in Tantegel Castle after declaring a job class, as he is able to impart an additional minor bonus when starting out in a new job.

--Ranger: Identical to original Dragon Warrior "Hero," but with half MP.
--Soldier: Loses mid- to high-level magic. HP/Str+, MP/Agi-
--Fighter: Loses almost all magic, as well as most weapons and armor. Str/Agi/Crit%+, MP-
--Priest: Loses high-end armor in exchange for high-level healing magic. MP+, HP/Str-
--Wizard: Loses high-end weapons and armor in exchange for high-level attack magic. MP+, HP/Str-
--All job classes retain the basic Heal and Blaze spells.

Monster Hearts

Monster hearts are a unique mechanic to DQC. Monster Hearts contain a magical "essence" of the wild monster's instinct that enters the player's "heart" and guides their reflexes and opens up latent abilities. Most monsters that are 'alive' and not human may be able to drop a heart after being defeated in battle. Like PCs, hearts gain XP and level-up into stronger versions in the same monster family.

Monster Hearts can be purchased from R. Terry's Artesinal Coronary Emporium, or 'Heart Shoppe' for short, located inside the scenic Swamp Cave in the lower level accessible from the East of the Rimuldar-side cave entrance.

More monster heart information will be added to this list as it is discovered.

Cantlin's Templar

After reaching LV15, characters are eligible to apply for an honorary membership in one of four prominent guilds operating in the town of Cantlin. Class training costs 10,000 GP and a character can only maintain one membership at any time. Re-classing to choose a different ability is possible, provided you have the financial means to do so. Abilities listed as a SKILL can be used even under the effects of STOPSPELL and bypass the effects of BOUNCE, while those listed as a SPELL function similarly to any other type of magic in DQC.

-Knights of Cantlin: "Gain a Soldier's mastery of the battlefield"
--Helm Splitter (Ranger - SKILL - 3MP - one enemy) May reduce an enemy's defense after a successful attack
--Whipping Boy (Soldier - SKILL - 3MP - one ally) Shields a party member from all harm for one turn
--War Cry (Fighter - SKILL - 3MP - enemy group) Attempts to induce FEAR in a group of foes
--Alma Mater (Priest - SKILL - 8MP - one ally) Allows for survival of next instant-death or otherwise fatal blow with 1HP, if current HP is above 1/2 MaxHP
--Limbo (Wizard - SPELL - 7MP - one enemy) Banishes a foe, gaining no XP or GP. Checks and slightly pierces BEAT resistance

-Initiates of Battle: "Gain a Fighter's discipline and poise"
--Backdraft (Ranger - SKILL - 6MP - ally party) Reflects the next breath attack upon the caster.
--Mercurial Thrust (Soldier - SKILL - 4MP - one enemy) Priority attack with a .75x damage modifier
--Psyche Up (Fighter SKILL - 4MP - caster) Builds up power, doubling STR (to a max of 255) on the next turn
--Double Up (Priest - SKILL - 4MP - one enemy) Priority attack with 2x damage modifier, but DEF is reduced to 0 for one turn
--Fire Breath (Wizard - SKILL - 8MP - all enemies) Deals 16-23 fire damage

-Church of Cantlin: "Gain a Priest's faith and compassion"
--M-Pathy (Ranger - SKILL - 0MP - one ally) Transfers 10-17 MP from the user to a chosen ally
--Miracle Slash (Soldier - SKILL - 4MP - one enemy) Heals the user for 1/2 of the damage dealt
--Meditation (Fighter - SKILL - 8MP - caster) Heals 85-100 HP, and can be used outside of battle
--Wave of Relief (Priest - SKILL - 12MP - ally group) Removes most status ailments
--Magic Barrier (Wizard - SPELL - 6MP - ally group) Reduces spell damage by 1/2

-House of Ramia: "Gain a Wizard's knowledge and focus"
--Fendspell (Ranger - SPELL - 8MP - caster) Causes all incoming and outgoing spells to fizzle (self-target spells still function normally)
--Flame Slash (Soldier - SKILL - 2MP - one enemy) Applies 5-12 fire damage to a successful attack
--Mens Sana (Fighter - SKILL - 6MP - caster) Removes all negative stat modifications and most status ailments
--Infernos (Priest - SPELL - 9MP - enemy group) Deals 20-35 wind damage. Checks and slightly pierces BURN resistance
--Transform (Wizard - SPELL - 12MP - caster) Assumes the form of a friend

The Town of Garinham
Founded by the bard and poet Garin, famous for composing the epic ballad "The Tale of Erdrick and the Lord of the Dark," Garinham is a haven for artists of all kinds. The beautiful beaches and ocean views have inspired as many great songs as the open plains and nearby craggy peaks have inspired wondrous poems. However, the number of young men with a lust for lyric has also given rise to a large number of scammers hoping to make a quick coin off of those not privy to the business side of art.

The Village of Kol

Deep in the heart of the forests of eastern Alefgard, Kol is oft associated with Elves, Sprites, and Faeries, and from this association stems a fascination with magic. One particular tourist attraction, a bathhouse in the northern parts, is famed for providing relief from rheumatism. However, xenophobia has begun to take root in recent days as the hamlet becomes more and more isolated due to the Dragonlord's influence.

The City of Hauksness

Despite its location in the middle of the desert, Hauksness was once a key trading post for merchant caravans and a welcome rest stop for travelers on their way to and from Cantlin. The strategic position of the town has also made it a convenient target to lay siege to over the years. However, each time the citizens have rallied together to rebuild the town -- until that fateful day a year and a half ago when the Dragonlord and his minions burned it to the ground. Ever since Hauksness was sacked the lines of communication between Cantlin and the rest of Alefgard have been severed, and the one-thriving bazaar town was reported to be lost forever. So what is it doing here now...?

The City of Cantlin

A fortress city nestled deep within the mountains and forests, Cantlin is well protected both by the natural features of the land, and by a great wall which encompasses the entire perimiter of the city and protects the populace from the fierce monsters that lurk just outside. Owing to it's remote location, Tantegel has been unable to contact its largest province since the Dragonlord's rise to power. With no promise of protection forthcoming from the kingdom, the powers that be in Cantlin have chosen instead to take matters into their own hand, and talk of secession from Tantegel abounds.
