If you wanted a challenge I suppose. I also think there would probably be a greater sense of satisfaction for completing the game without the code.

If you're good enough at the game that you don't need the extra lives, then you can save a couple of seconds before starting the game by not inputting the code.

Otherwise, there's no harm in it.

The lack of safety net sharpens your skills. It drives you to not get hit rather than to rely on additional lives.

Coz it's cheating. And you haven't beaten the game if you used it. It's not a hard game anyway, it's really quite simple - just get the spread gun and you've won the game basically.
The sequels are where it actually starts to get difficult but this first one is a piece of cake.
