You're probably not prepared for the emotional intensity of that scene, even if you know that it's coming. In some ways the anticipation will fill you with dread or sadness. The storytelling itself is awesome. Spoilers really only ruin a story that has one lame twist. Phantasy Star IV is far better than that, and Alys's death has actual pathos.

Triforce, the point of that happening was to kind of force Chaz to grow up in a hurry. It gave him more depth to his personality. The dialogue near the end of the game makes this clear.
