So, I've been playing through this game again. Just finished it. I can't help but wonder - did they intend another game to follow this one immediately in the timeline? If not, why do we have the ability to save again after the credits? The first game, this allowed you to get a passcode to carry everything over. Here, though? We have Dark Dawn to follow it up, but no data transfer. So why can we save it there?

Saving lets you keep character stats for new game+ (called easy mode by the game, which is... fairly accurate).

That aside, the developers once stated that these games were intended as a prologue to a greater story, so it doesn't seem likely they intended another game to follow immediately after. However, they may have meant to make the game slightly longer considering there are some signs pointing to them having to wrap it up quickly, such as the western continents being largely devoid of content, later dungeon maps having less polished tilework, various loose ends regarding characters/setting/story, and a different area on the world map (still north of Prox) where it looks like Mars Lighthouse was supposed to be placed.
