The pinball game is ok but too easy, after a while I'd just grab a quick shield and drain on purpose.

On the other hand, i thought i had an easy Chaos Emerald coming my way in Green Hill, then there's this new bonus stage that's harder than at least 6 of the 7 from regular Mania.

Ray's hover is my favorite new addition so far, it's a fun challenge seeing how long you can glide ala Mario World without hitting something or getting hit (not as long).

Yea the new Emerald Stages really threw me too, especially as I’ve not beat 1 in regular Mania. Lol I felt so inadequate.

I like the pinball machine. It fills two roles; 1, it’s something different than the Blue/Red Sphere levels that had an element of “well when I fail nothing happens, when I win nothing significant is gained immediately so why play them?” In fact in normal Mania mode I kinda started to hate seeing them because I’m not quite good enough to be proficient at any given sphere stage. So 2, the pinball & crane game lets me relax instead of staying on edge at the Sphere stages’s constant acceleration, and lets me pick and choose the power or ability I want for where I’m currently at in Encore mode. Like do I need Ray or Tails to get higher or do I need an elemental shield for sonic instead? It’s really well crafted and I think it’s easy on purpose to allow for a relaxing reprieve from the high octane gameplay of the main game.

And because of all these changes, including the new “Random Character” boxes and the reused Swap Boxes to allow for you to really choose what 1 Of the 5 characters you want, the flow of the game is insanely improved. I don’t feel pressured to fly, but when I do fly it’s so god damn exhilarating and nothing breaks my flow. Even losing lives/characters, the “feels bad” of dying is pretty much gone thanks to the new boxes and crane pinball game.

And I love how when Mighty is Balled up he doesn’t take 1 hit from spikes. Or better said, as long as he is balled up you are free to touch 1 spiked surface and just bounce off of it. I’ve abused the crap out of this ability so far lol. It’s like giving a middle finger to all of MegaMan design and some old school Sonic design all at once haha.

Ray is awesome too. Definitely different than Knuckles’ Gliding or Tails’ Flying. I still suck with him though.

God this update is so f***ing good. And so much nostalgia mixed with new. And the game was already pretty awesome before the update to Plus. Now it’s near perfection.

Sounds like I need to replay this. Did the update include all of this, or do I need to splurge again?

Update is only $5 digitally and yes it uses your same save, keeps your Mania progress and puts Encore mode separate, but unlocks in Encore mode let you use the more in the new Competitive 4 player mode too. I hear the update also includes some minor improvements to Mania mode.

You can also buy Sonic Mania Plus physically for $30 in most places now. Original digital release was just $20. So this pricing structure is a lot like Shovel Knight’s.

Haven't tried Encore yet, but I played through the updated Mania mode today as Sonic (note this update is free and independent of the DLC if you already have the digital version).

* Metal Sonic is much better. The first phase doesn't pointlessly repeat after the second phase, and I think the second phase takes fewer hits. The final phase is completely new (well, referencing S3&K's final boss) and much harder, but still a bit problematic because of how easy it is to get trapped on the left side of the boss (and die) if you try just rolling towards the weakspot because you won't have enough momentum to bounce back to safety. So spin dashing between its attack phases is the safest way. Not as interesting as it could be but you still have to time the spin dash to avoid the hand.

* In Mirage Saloon Act 1 you can still spin-dash off the plane to your death... Not convinced this act is canon because Tails is a better pilot than that. I don't think anything was tweaked here (boss should have had less RNG). It's the worst act in the game, but I still enjoy the change of pace and skill in bouncing on enemies without losing control.

* Ho! They fixed the submarine boss! Three changes:

1. Standing on a platform no longer kills you when the tentacles pull it under water (this was really weird before and didn't make any physical sense in Sonic's world... almost like a collision bug).
2. You can now re-collect rings that have fallen into the oil.
3. The spinning orbs don't seem to aim at you as often, making it easier to dodge their bullets when you're in the oil.

* There's other subtle adjustments, like the Metallic Madness Act 1 boss can no longer cheaply squash you on the right side when it first appears.

* After the credits you get a screen showing your total time along with splits from every act. I really like this because although I don't play Time Attack mode (which should have had medals awarded for certain time thresholds), I like efficiently tearing through the full game all at once and seeing my progress at the end. All it needs from here is some kind of rigorous scoring system (time and rings converted to score at level end and lives cashed in at game end with some small tweaks to prevent abuse and streamlining in parts) and I would probably play this game every night for months.

That boss with the floors that rise in OOZ had the spikes shrunk so they cost you rings but don't kill you, also.

There's a setting to disable the time limit too
