So I’m currently running an AMD A10 6700 processor, 8gb of ram and an NVIDIA 660ti and getting way more than 60fps on high settings in single player content.

In 5man stuff I keep it at a fair-medium range to stay at 60.

In LFR I go down to fair to keep everything stable.

My rig is equipped with Crossfire, so I can technically put in an extra 550.

Should I spend the (currently excessive) cash on a 980? Or even a 780? Or will I not take too big of a hit when the expansion drops?

Don't upgrade for a marginal gain unless you really feel like burning a hole in your pocket.

If you're considering dropping the cash for a 980, then wait a little longer and get the 1080. It's worth the bit of extra waiting.

Tangentially, where are you planning to buy your card from?

I tend to shop around for the best price. I always consult the well known places like New Egg, and when I worked at Amazon I actually had some chances at good buys on cards there.

Any suggestions are welcome, and as a side note, is there an affordable processor you would recommend for the 1080? I need to upgrade that as well.

I don't have any processor recommendations. I'm using an older AMD processor from four years ago and am not up to date on newer cores; upgrading for me would require a new motherboard which is a pain to do without also getting a new copy of Windows.

I ended up grabbing an entirely new rig. I snagged an I5 8600k and an nvidia gtx 1070 to round everything out.
