Hey everybody! Don't know who might remember me, but after a long hiatus from anything FF1 I have finally decided to return. Planning on streaming some playthroughs and hopefully eventually doing a video review.

In the meantime resuming from the past couple of topics:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/522595-final-fantasy/78014626

Over the course of these I've tried a whole load of different parties and tried giving my thoughts on them as I went along.
I'm gonna try and be a little more open to the crazy parties than I was before, but I do think I want to try a few "easy" parties to get back into the swing of things, it has been over a year since I last played after all. :P
I think I'll also be keeping a second list of parties reserved for streaming/recording.

I last left off with a Fighter/Fighter/White Mage/Black Mage party on my NES Classic, actually doesn't seem like I said much of anything about it in the second topic, sorry about that. :(
From what I remember, it was generally solid as one would expect, but I do remember having more issues than I "should" have with such a solid setup since I was going through everything rushed and underlevelled.

Feeling a bit disorientated resuming after all this time, I see I'm Level 20 outside Onrac, Class Changed, have two Ribbons and three Orbs lit as well as full Level 7 spells so I figure Tiamat is next on my list.

Welcome back! My suggestions would be on the harder side, so you can either work up to them or ignore them, but I think they're fun and are very doable.

FI/RM duo
RM/WM/BM trio
L43 474/474 9/9/9/8/8/8/7/7 Int/MDef: 57/104
HDCEA: 114-109-104/51-53-46/3-4-6.5/83/43(37) Resist: Ice/(Fire)/(Lit)/Death AtkElem: Ice-Fire-Coral

Well, here we go, already beat it...

Fi/Fi/WM/BM - MARK/MATT/NINA/OLLY
I had to re-orientate myself but it didn't take long - I forgot the CHIME but it was quick enough to figure that out and grab it and go back.

Starting with the Air Castle I was kinda stressing out more than I needed to about equipment distribution.

Regardless, everything was pretty smooth from there, had to restart once on my first TOFR visit because Lich wiped out both Mages with NUKE but the second attempt went very smoothly.

After EXITing with Masamune, I did decide to do a mini-grind to Level 25 before doing the final run so I'd have L8 spell charges. EXITed again before resting and saving, the final run I did first time since the RNG was pretty kind to me, ended with everyone alive and Level 26.

Overall, it's obviously a very effective party but I do remember times before my hiatus I struggled a bit at points just because I was rushing things a bit, yet resuming was VERY smooth. No serious complaints, but obviously you can do even better. Probably one of my favorite versions of the Fi/?/WM/BM formula (honestly if the ? isn't a Fighter or Red Mage, it's kinda overrated but we already know that.).

Thanks Beege!

I certainly remember the idea of the first one, still very much in the plans I think, just not sure whether it's one I'll stream or one I do for this topic.

The second I'm slightly hesitant on because I remember doing similar full parties and them being a pain but I think I can take it (plus everyone gets Ribbons that way! :P )

But my next party will be... Fi/Fi/Fi/RM!
...Yeah, probably disappointing but I'm still getting re-acclimated to the game so starting off with a softball. I'll definitely go for something more challenging afterwards

Aside from those two suggestions my next possible parties after I think will be:
WM/WM or BM/BM/BM - Something like these had been suggested a bunch but I had been shirking away from doing one like this for a while. I think it's time to open myself up to it.
Th/BB/RM/WM - My favorite party for the PSP version, obviously worse here but I'm slightly curious how badly or passably it would perform.
Fi/BB/BM/BM - I did BB/BB/BM/BM once and it was equal parts "interesting" and "grindy, frightening pain", maybe this could maintain the "feel" of it while being less of a pain at points.

And might take a look back at any I'd passed up previously, too.

For Fi/Fi/Fi/RM, might I suggest perhaps trying to basically speedrun the game. It's arguably one of the strongest/fastest parties possible, so you could try to run it with zero grinding or something like that. Maybe fight every battle you encounter, but never stop to grind anywhere and always try to complete each dungeon on the first go? Might make it a little more interesting and show off just how overpowered that party is. Enjoy!

Beege had some good suggestions with a trio or duo.

FI/FI/FI/RM isn't the best for speedrunning, but it is overpowered. Having limited magic slows things down considerably. To get through things faster, kill off the Fighters after the RM learns ICE, buy him a Short Sword, and go solo until level 7. (Buy LIT2 on level 6). Then revive the Fighters and go kill the Wizards and Astos.

As for your next party, try FI/RM/BM/BM. Again, not the best for speedrunning, but you gain EXP very fast with this party. It is a HUGE improvement over the BB/BB/BM/BM party.

But if you want a challenge, try a solo Thief, no class change %^O

While I'm not going all the way there, I'm definitely taking things at a fast pace for sure, more on that in a bit.

I do remember that the ones I'd seen had been using Fi/Fi/RM/WM (One I hadn't tried but still feel like I can strongly recommend for newcomers).

That definitely sounds like an interesting one, will strongly consider it.

...That's still a little too hardcore for even me, at least until I try one of the "good" solos (Fighter, Red Mage, Black Belt).

And to be honest, even as challenge runs go, I'd never be keen on "no class change", not because of difficulty so much as just making things less interesting to me.

I've gone and started now, I actually beat Garland at Level 1 and smashed my way to Motoya's for some early items and then to Provoka.

I decided to buy ICE and a couple Scimitars there (thinking that since the Short Swords were too expensive to go for the "next best" thing)... Seems like a mistake from being hardly better than Rapiers, so maybe I shouldn't have bothered at all.

Some more progress:

Both trips through the Swamp Cave and facing Astos required a few attempts but after getting the KEY, it's been smooth sailing, particularly having them equipped with the Rune Sword, Were Sword and two Silver Swords.

Managed to fill my stack of HEALs, get all the Level 4 spells for my Red Mage (that I don't yet have charges for) and still have a bunch of money left before even talking to the Dwarves, so I think it'll be be quite smooth for a while now.

My two chokepoints with 3-4 Fighters are the Earth Cave and Ice Cave. Mainly due to paraplink and cocatrice in the Earth Cave. But the Ice Cave is a roll of the dice.

Makes sense, Paralysis is always a pain to deal with and the Ice Cave is never really not a pain but it's easier with White Mages to revive (and to a lesser extent, Black/Red Mages to spam Fire spells)
