My first names were very lame, and were some half-assed attempts to describe their main duties or job types:

FIGHTER - "Att." --- ("Attack")
THIEF - "Stl." --- ("Steal")
WHITE MAGE - "Def." --- ("Defend")
BLACK MAGE - "Pwr." --- ("Power")

Of course, there are lots off things that are wrong with these names or that don't even make sense, so I eventually changed to these names instead:

FIGHTER - "Atk." --- ("Attack")
THIEF - "Esc." --- ("Escape")
WHITE MAGE - "Wht." --- ("White")
BLACK MAGE - "Blk." --- ("Black")

These names are still kinda lame, but they are much better than the first names and describe the jobs much better.
Also, "Atk." looks better than "Att.", in my opinion.

I then eventually switched to the Japanese version (I can read Japanese and understand enough to make it through this game), and in that version I switched to these names:

FIGHTER - "Hi/Ro/No/Bu"
THIEF - "No/Bu/O"
WHITE MAGE - "Yo/Shi/Ta/Ka"
BLACK MAGE - "Te/Tsu/Ya"

Each Hiragana character starts with a capital letter, and each character is separated by a slash.
...OR at least, that's what I think.

For a while, my sister had our NES and all our games from when we were growing up. My brother-in-law popped Final Fantasy in and loaded up the save and had a good laugh at the various toilet-y names I'd given the characters back when I was like, 11.

My teams usually spell out a message:

WE
GON
NA
DIE
(for a weak party)

or

TIME
TO
KICK
BUTT
(stronger one)

I look at it more that I have 16 characters to come up with a phrase/sentence, rather than 4 characters per name.

I used to name the characters in FF3 after the Beatles members:
John, Paul, George and Ringo.

I don't know why, but for some reason those names just felt right for the jobs Fighter, Monk, White Mage and Black Mage (my usual starting jobs).
I am particularly amazed by how perfect the names "George" and "Ringo" seem to be for a White Mage and a Black Mage.
...OR at least, that's what I think.
