For me, it just looked like a lot of fun and my people played it with me. What about you?

I was really into Pokémon and saw Pikachu on the cover when I was in an EB Games as a kid, had enough money to buy one game and spent (what felt like) an hour deciding between this and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. Went with this and have never regretted it.

(I did get XD a few years later and it was also great)

I first played it when I was around 7-8 years old at a friend's house, and loved it. Finally got a copy for myself in middle school, and found out about the competitive scene in mid high school. I keep playing because I haven't found a game I like more yet.

I saw a commercial in 2004 that the GC was going on sale for $150 and would come with Mario Sunshine so I hopped on that deal. Decided Melee would be a fun addition while I was doing that. It was actually the last physical game I ever bought for a non-portable console.

I got the game on release in 2001 because screenshots in Nintendo Power looked incredible

I got into the competitive scene in 2014 due to a combination of having watched EVOs and Apexes of 2013-14 after they got coverage where they were treated like big gaming events and thinking they were cool and having college roommates in the scene (mostly the former for spectating and the latter for actually playing the game)

Did you buy BotW digitally then? And have you bought other non physical games since?

Saw Shined Blind and Kaze no Kizzu in 2006 and was just amazed at the things these people were doing that I didn't even think were possible. Downloaded those videos and just watched them over and over (I remember being on family vacations and rewatching these over and over again in the car!) to try to replicate those scenarios. Eventually found Wak's Advanced How to Play videos on youtube and just grinded it out from there.

I bought BotW physically (since retail is cheaper than online) and it was my first physical purchase for console since Melee. I can't recall whether I posted that comment before or after I got BotW. The only other games I've bought since Melee have been Yugioh games for handheld consoles (DS).

Technically my brother convinced me to play Melee, but we've played Smash our entire lives. Melee as kids, we moved on to Brawl, and before S4 came out, we got into PM.

My brother and I were extremely competitive with each other and our friends, and we just kept playing together and got better and better. We eventually started going to PM tournaments and even though we bustered out, we still had a good time. In 2015, he convinced me to switch to Melee because there's less jank than PM did, and we've played since.
