I got the idea for this from TV Tropes:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/FinalFantasyXII

The Judges of Archadia

The Entire Group

The highest-ranking officers in Archadia short of the Imperial family. The Judges were created explicitly to serve as Judge, Jury, and Executioner, military and law enforcement personnel that could pass and carry out sentences with impunity to keep the peace as Archadia's borders expanded. The Judge Magisters in turn are the commanders of the Judges and are the absolute legal and military authority figures. They serve the current Imperial family, House Solidor, as both military commanders and personal bodyguards.

So, taking that into consideration, are the Imperial Judges basically Ivalice's fantasy counterpart to four-star military officers like these?

Or does being directly beneath the Imperial family make them somewhat closer to the Presidential cabinet?

I could see them as that. I mean each judge could be running a war campaign in a region and they have the authority to execute the war as situations permit. I think that’s how generals in charge of a campaign, like IRaq war did it. But president dictates the overall mission.
Video games are awesome :D
