All I really ask from my mediocre space fantasy at this point is to not be as terrible as the prequels (and I suspect that the people rabidly screaming that The Last Jedi is worse than the prequels are being hyperbolic and insane, because it is almost scientifically impossible for anything to be worse than The Phantom Menace).

Honestly, TFA *was* worse than TPM, even the version that doesn't edit out Jar-Jar being Jar-Jar. Even after TPM, I could muster up excitement for the next film. TFA killed the franchise for me. It did the impossible -- it made me not care about Star Wars.

TFA set the bar so low that I expect TLJ can hop over it.

Yeah... no.

Also, this is the point where I stop listening and back slowly out the door, shaking my head.

Tsk, tsk, and to think I used to have such respect for you! Now I find that you're over-representing the blandest and s***tiest of the first seven SW films.

I'm not overrepresenting TFA. Overrepresenting it would be saying it was awesome, where I generally think it was relatively safe and mediocre.

That being said, I will take mediocre over a painfully inflamed bloody bowel movement like TPM, which seems to make the wrong creative decision at literally every single possible opportunity it can. A lot of the things wrong with the other prequels are rooted squarely in things TPM breaks, which in turn makes it worse by definition.

About the only thing that can be salvaged out of TPM is the music, which is probably because it's the one thing Lucas didn't really have much input on.

So I made a bunch of cookies and packaged them. I'm sending them to relatives and my boyfriend. Shortbread cookies with jelly centers (half raspberry and half apricot), peanut butter, and peppermint-chocolate oatmeal. All of it's so delicious and a bit aromatic.

Then, to top things off with the padding I have to add to my boyfriend's container, I added a hand-drawn illustration of mine of a carbuncle from Final Fantasy, wearing a Santa hat, while it noms on a chocolate chip cookie. I put "Happy Holidays" in sort of golden lettering at the top. He ought to appreciate that. =p

So while I tend to instinctively think Knives is probably right in that particular tete-a-tete with Cyborg, I can't actually say anything definitively until I actually bother watching it.

I should note that a fair amount of my problems with it actually have nothing to do with how Star Wars-y the film is, or how it meets my particular expectations of what Star Wars should be. A good deal of it is what I feel to be inexcusably poor story and creative/directional choices, which would be bad no matter what the film was about. The other half of my complaints are indeed Star Wars-y related.

That said, if anyone remembers, I was basically pessimistic, indifferent at best towards the new trilogy the very moment it was announced, so the fact that TLJ failed to win me over is basically a giant "meh" at this point. Sure, the return of Mark Hamill and still having the movie be a let-down for me sucks, but I wasn't exactly basing my fandom over the new trilogy, anyways.

That, and since TFA was a giant boring ANH rip-off,we basically all agreed that the only salvation the new trilogy had was going to be based off TLJ. Since it failed at that for me, it basically makes it impossible for IX to be any good, and I can consider this new trilogy basically a wash.

Don't worry, I won't be signing any petitions or declaring the Prequels are now OK by comparison. That said, I at least knew what the Prequels were about, and what the point was. 2 films into this new trilogy, I have no idea what the point is, besides some nebulous sense of "new era of Star Wars."

Now hold on just a minute. Sure, TPM had its problems and nobody's saying it wasn't bad, but it was *still* a huge step up from that bland, boring, awful, derivative, soulless, time-sucking s*** show known as TFA. Sure, Darth Maul barely got any time -- because they had to squeeze in a pointless 30 minute pod race to sell games and toys -- but he was still a large improvement over an angsty teen throwing temper tantrums. And yeah, baby Annie was annoying *but* we had Liam Neeson as a f***ing Jedi. And all of the monsters and droids were a helluva lot cooler.

Frankly, you named one thing you liked about TPM -- I'm sure there's more if you tried -- but I can't really think of anything I liked about TFA. The closest was that air & ground battle (and I guess the Millennium Falcon escape in the beginning) but even then the choreography looked lousy. It reminded me of the scene from GoT's Battle of the Bastards where Jon is navigating through the melee, except that looked more capably done despite its obvious choreography.

At least with TPM they can edit s*** out to make it look passable (cutting down the pod race, reducing Jar-Jar, etc). There isn't enough good in TFA to do anything with.

Wish my girlfriend did all that for me. Or just the delicious cookie part. I had to make the Christmas cookies, and they came out s***ty :/
