As soon as I start the car and while I'm driving, a sound just like a very loud vacuum cleaner can be heard. My check engine light is also on so I don't think it's a belt. This just started happening today.

Does anyone have an idea on what is causing this?

Go get the code read at a Auto-whatevers. Fan clutch might be stuck or somethin'

And at no point did it occur to you "Crikey, I have a video camera in my pocket, maybe I should record this so people might know what I'm talking about."
I faced it all and I stood tall- And did it my way.

Sounds like either a stuck fan clutch (if manual fan), or a bad temp sensor or similar (if electric fan). Could also be a vacuum leak as well.
I can't believe I live in a country where Casey Anthony will make more money than me

Did you leave a vacuum cleaner plugged into your car?

I imagine the word "Crikey" doesn't occur to many people in their day to day lives.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Or maybe the electric fan motor went out. Check your fuses
