Many countries are beginning to ban flights involving the affected nations:

The discovery of a new Covid-19 variant first detected in South Africa prompted multiple countries to impose travel restrictions on at least six African nations.

Currently known as B.1.1.529, the newly identified variant appears to be spreading rapidly in parts of South Africa and scientists are concerned that its unusually high number of mutations could make it more transmissible and result in immune evasion.
These are the countries that have announced restrictions so far:
  • Italy
  • Austria
  • France
  • Japan
  • The United Kingdom
  • Singapore
  • The Netherlands
  • Malta
  • Malaysia
  • Morocco
  • Philippines

Makes sense to at least try and delay the spread until they know what they are dealing with.

I'm all for a travel ban if it can prevent this variant from becoming the new delta. I just wonder if we have learned about it quick enough to stop it.

IT may be too little, too late to stop this.

Looks like we just passed a travel ban from the outbreak nations.

Looks like the "ban" is different in practice for each nations.
On the most lenient side, we have japan with the 10 day quarantine.
The most restrictive is European, with ban to travelers who have entered the outbreak nations.

I don't know what the US policy is.
Is it the same as the European?
