Before they were sworn in?

Say in 2024 Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz run and win the election in a landslide. But then a week after the election there is a terrible car accident with them and most of their entrouage. They don't survive.

Does someone literally just pick whoever they likle to be the new president? Even though the public just spoke and voted for someone else? If so who? The Senators?

Or is there like a new Republican primary? A secondary?

What if the guys they got to replace them were hugely unpopular and the guys who voted say "I would have voted Democrat if they were the ticket!" and now there's questions about if the new guys could have won an actual election?

They'd follow the precedent set in 1872, where the losing candidate lost and then died and it was basically up to electors on whom to vote for:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1872_United_States_presidential_election

Granted, in a winning candidate scenario where both ends of the ticket died, there'd probably be an emergency national convention to choose replacements and it'd up to the electors to decide if they agreed or not.

If no majority of electors is reached, it'd go to a continent election in first the House and then the Senate to determine POTUS and Veep likely likewise with a candidate chosen by the party.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.
