Yes, writer of this article, it surely is surprising that the "vast rural Northern California" doesn't get votes based upon how much land they occupy.

They made the mistake of interpreting generic frustration and "throw the bums out" public sentiment with any particular partisan energy.

Their second mistake was running Larry Elder thinking to exploit identity politics in a blue state, but forgetting Larry Elder is a ridiculous crazy person.
Conservatism and the republican party have become ridiculous self-parody.

Ironically, many in "vast rural NoCal" doesn't realize how big the state is as much as out of staters. Yes, there's a s*** ton of land up there, but it doesn't vote.

I haven't seen data on this but I think Elder appealed to CA's more urban redcaps. I've been way up there North of Sacramento before and it can get Wyoming, Idaho-ish up there. Even Elder seems too black for them.

The Republican party actually had a decent chance of flipping the state. All they had to do was rally behind someone who wasn't a complete dumpster fire of a candidate.

The only way they could have won was if there wasn't a singular candidate for Newsom to campaign against. And even that was a longshot.
