How far do you think that ranking will fall for 2020? I say they fall at least 25 places. 50th place sound about right.

Let's take it line by line:

Electoral process and pluralism
2019 score: 9.17
For all its faults, it was a free and fair election, and the sitting president, with its tentacles deep in the judicial system and attempted pressure on all fronts, was unable to overturn that.

Functioning of government
2019 score: 7.14
What an embarrassing year for this category for the United States. Just appalling.

Political participation
2019 score: 7.78
We've seen record numbers of voters, and participation at levels the US hasn't had for decades. A wider and more diverse group of people is running for, and being elected for office. We might gain ground in this metric for 2020.

Political culture
2019 score: 7.50
Dumpster fire.

Civil liberties
2019 score: 8.24
That's going to be pretty subjective. Failure to enforce firm lockdowns has cost thousands of American lives in 2020, but the state being unable / unwilling to do so might reflect well on civil liberties by some measures? Autocratic crackdowns on peaceful protestors is a terrible look though.

It worked out in the end but the fact that the traitors were even able to try to overturn a fair election raises some red flags. 1 point should be lost here. Also, the electoral system is fundamentally flawed so it's surprising that the US had scored as high as a 9.

Functioning of government
2019 score: 7.14
Yikes. The US should not get higher than a 5 for 2020.

Political participation
2019 score: 7.78
This is the only score that can actually go up, seeing how people voted in record numbers.

Political culture
2019 score: 7.50
Ouch. Again, no higher than a 5.

Civil liberties
2019 score: 8.24
I think this should go down. The difference in treatments by the police between BLM and Trump rioters is staggering. You are only guaranteed your right to protest if you are right-wing. Also, I believe feeling safe from a deadly virus is a civil liberty (along with feeling safe from gun violence). The lack of action on the pandemic is an attack on civil liberty, because health & safety is a basic human right.
Health is Freedom. Safety is Freedom. Equality is Freedom.
