  3. UK set for new PM as Theresa May quits
Marmitecashews 2 years ago#1
Theresa May has said she will quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving the way for a contest to decide a new prime minister.

In an emotional statement, she said she had done her best to deliver Brexit and it was a matter of "deep regret" that she had been unable to do so.

Mrs May said she would continue to serve as PM while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.

The party said it hoped a new leader could be in place by the end of July.

It means Mrs May will still be prime minister when US President Donald Trump makes his state visit to the UK at the start of June.

Mrs May announced she would step down as Tory leader on 7 June and had agreed with the chairman of Tory backbenchers that a leadership contest should begin the following week.

Tory leadership: Matt Hancock latest candidate to enter race

The race to become the next Conservative Party leader has begun, following Theresa May's announcement that she will step down next month.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is the fifth Tory to enter the race.

He told the BBC that delivering Brexit was "mission critical" and Mrs May's successor must be more "brutally honest" about the "trade-offs" required to get a deal through Parliament.

The leadership contest will determine who is the UK's next prime minister.

Party bosses expect a new leader to be chosen by the end of July.

Mrs May confirmed on Friday that she will resign as party leader on 7 June, but will continue as PM while the leadership contest takes place.

She agreed with chairman of the Tory backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, that the process to choose a new leader should begin the week after she stands down.

Tory leadership: Dominic Raab enters race

Dominic Raab has become the latest Conservative MP to say he will run for Tory leadership.

The former Brexit secretary is the sixth Tory to enter the race after Theresa May said she would resign as party leader on 7 June.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Mr Raab said he would prefer for the UK to leave the EU with a deal.

But he said the UK must "calmly demonstrate unflinching resolve to leave in October - at the latest".

Whoever wins the leadership contest will become the UK's next prime minister.

Party bosses expect a new leader to be chosen by the end of July.

Tory leadership: Raab sets out leader bid as Gove joins race

Dominic Raab has been making his pitch to become Conservative leader, as Michael Gove becomes the eighth MP to join the race to succeed Theresa May.

Mr Raab told the BBC he would fight for a "fairer" Brexit deal with the EU - but if that were not possible, the UK would leave with no deal in October.

Mr Gove confirmed he would run to "deliver Brexit" and unite the party.

Chancellor Philip Hammond said it would be a "dangerous strategy" to ignore Parliament, which has opposed no-deal.

Tory leadership: Johnson says party on 'final warning'

Boris Johnson, the front-runner in the Tory leadership race, has said the party risks being "dismissed" if it does not deliver Brexit.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said voters in the EU election issued a "crushing rebuke" to the Conservatives.

Fellow candidate, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said the party faces an "existential risk" over Brexit.

Eight candidates have declared they are standing for leader, after Theresa May said she would resign.

Mr Johnson said voters had issued the party with a "final warning" as the Tories came fourth in Hillingdon, where he is an MP, and the Brexit Party emerged with the largest number of MEPs overall.

Sajid Javid to run for Tory party leader

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has become the latest MP to join the race for the Conservative Party leadership.

Announcing his candidacy on Twitter, Mr Javid said that "first and foremost, we must deliver Brexit".

He is the ninth member of the Tory Party to confirm he is running, and whoever wins will become the next UK prime minister.

It follows the announcement by Theresa May on Friday that she would stand down as leader on 7 June.

She confirmed she would stay on as PM until a new leader is chosen - which senior Conservative figures said should be by the end of July.

Tory leadership contest: Jeremy Hunt warns against no-deal Brexit 'suicide'

Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt has warned that his party will be committing "political suicide" if it tries to push through a no-deal Brexit.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the move to no-deal would result in a general election, which could see Labour take power.

The foreign secretary is one of 10 people seeking to replace Theresa May.

One leadership contender, Esther McVey, said "political suicide" would be not leaving the EU at the end of October.

The deadline the EU has set for Brexit is 31 October.

The official race to be Conservative party leader gets under way in early June, after Theresa May stands down - but jostling between candidates has already begun.

The winner, expected to be named by late July, will also become prime minister.

Tory leadership contest: Cleverly says no deal better than no Brexit

Not delivering Brexit at all would be "significantly more damaging" than no deal, Conservative leadership candidate James Cleverly has said.

However, the Brexit minister added that leaving the EU without a deal was "not my preferred outcome".

"I am Brexit tooth and claw, but we need to be pragmatic and sensible and leave with a deal," he told the BBC.

Meanwhile another leadership hopeful, Home Secretary Sajid Javid, has vowed to recruit 20,000 new police officers.

Writing in the Sun, Mr Javid says: "More police on the beat means less crime on our streets. Not exactly rocket science is it?"

BBC Reality Check says, under the Conservative and coalition governments, the number of police offices has fallen by somewhere between 19,000 and 22,000.

Tory leadership contest: Iain Duncan Smith warns of 'chaos'

Iain Duncan Smith has called for a re-writing of the Conservative leadership contest rules to avoid "chaos".

Eleven MPs have declared so far that they will run to replace Theresa May, with the number expected to rise.

Mr Duncan Smith, who led the Tories from 2001 to 2003, told the BBC the number of MPs needed to nominate a candidate had to be increased.

And the party must look at eliminating more runners during early voting in order to speed up the contest, he said.

At the moment, only two MPs need to nominate a candidate for them to stand. Mr Duncan Smith said that threshold should rise to "10, maybe 12".

Tory leadership contest: Mark Harper is 12th MP to enter race

Conservative MP Mark Harper has become the 12th candidate to join the race to replace Prime Minister Theresa May.

The former chief whip told the Daily Telegraph he was "quite happy to acknowledge that in this contest I am the underdog".

He faces 11 other candidates, including five current and four former cabinet ministers.

The winner, expected to be announced by the end of July, will succeed Mrs May as Tory leader and UK prime minister.

Mr Harper, MP for the Forest of Dean, was a minister in the Home Office and Department for Work and Pensions during the 2010-2015 coalition government and is a former chief whip.
